Every year, I order 1108 bottles of the same brand of perfume. I pretend to do experiments on them, testing their compounds and such. But it’s not the perfume I want. It’s the number of bottles that he purchases.
11th of August was the first time that me and Zack met again. The company “Éclair” is a good company to invest in this time of year. If Zack becomes a shareholder, the huge shipment of their perfume will arise suspicion. They’ll think that someone is trying to resell it and therefore, will investigate the matter.
Yeah, I know, being locked up in this large house has made me a genius planner… and a tad mad in the package. Robin is what is keeping me sane here.
“Mummy? Uncle Mikey is looking for you.” Robin came running into my room, his arms wide open waiting for a hug. I smiled and put him onto the bed. “Okay, I’ll be right back.”
I can’t refuse him… not when he has my son in the palm of his hand. On the way, my metal collar started to itch. As I arrived into the library, he sat there, a book in hand. A chess board was set out, the monochromic squares making me feel an even bigger prisoner than I already was.
He closed his book, taking off his glasses. He got up, walking towards the chess board in his confident and scummy strut. “Care to play with me?” I looked away from him. “I don’t know the rules.” He chuckled. “Liar. Sit down.”
I looked at the wooden carvings on the seat. All made by hand… and so beautifully made. It made me want to sit in it. I pulled it back and sat. The board consisted of all the ordinary chess pieces that one could expect.
“I heard an amusing rumour… that you come in here everyday and take out five books. It’s always five, you never take out six or four. Six books… and then you bring them back the very next day and take six more. Are you trying to find an escape route in the pages of my novels?”
He then played the first move. “Not at all. In fact, the reason why I’m reading so much, could you guess it, I wonder.” I then played the next move, looking right into his eyes. He chuckled and played the next move. We went back and forth like this for a while until he finally spoke.
“You’re looking for answers.” “What answers.” He then froze his hand, then slowly placed his next pawn. “Isn’t it you who should be answering that question? You amuse me, that’s why I keep you here. Your precious husband hadn’t come to save you in six years. What makes you think that the next year is going to be different?”
I placed the next piece, and then it was his turn. Eventually, he grinned and placed his pawn in front of my king. “You see? Even a simple pawn can take down a king. Check.”
I smiled and then moved my king away. “But, you see, check doesn’t mean that you’ve killed the King. It just means that you’ve cornered him. And while that sweet pawn of yours can only stay there, I go and take… this.”
As he played his next few moves, I then backed him into a corner until he fell into my trap. “And that, Michael Jones, is how you kill a king.” My eyes looked at him fiercely as I got up out of the chair and walked out of the library, taking a book from a random shelf on the way out. And that’s how I win… in my own way.
