I love this… The stench of blood on my black trench coat filled my nostrils as I try to breathe in the sweet air. I can almost catch the aroma of bread emitting from the bakery down the street. But nothing could hide the stench of thus much blood… not even the most potent mint aftershave.
I sit on the roof of a house in Country Y, just waiting as the minutes tick by. My target is right next door. A great job to say the least. I get paid twice as much and the man deserves to die, which is always a bonus.
“Well, the time of death has come. Run all you want, you’ll never escape the hands of the Joker.” As I jumped down from the roof and disappeared into the misty streets below, my trench coat fluttering in the wind, all was quiet.
Today was supposed to be yet another job but today, something happened. A moment in my life’s history that marked a significant time. Never did I expect to find what I did that day. Not once… not ever.
I casually walked through the front door, the lights if the upper study room still lit, inviting me in. I slowly walked up the stairs like an invisible shadow, not creating a bit of noise at all. I pride myself on my discreet nature. It’s one of my selling points as an assassin.
I opened the door and I saw him. My target. An old man wearing a black outfit simply sat in a chair right in the middle of the room. He was expecting death.
“And you must be the man that my brother sent to kill me. Well, I can’t say that I’ve not been expecting you.” I looked at him from head to toe. No weapons, no devices to help in his escape. He was prepared and awaiting death.
“Milhouse Milburn. Do you know your sins?” He sighed and smiled sweetly. “I do.” He seems remorseful but looks can be deceiving. “What are your sins?” He smiled and slowly started to list them to me. Every word held the weight that it held on his heart.
Taking out my dagger, I looked at the man. He deserved to die, despite the fact that he was remorseful. Raising my dagger, ready to take his life without wavering conviction, a girl’s voice resonated throughout the room. “Stop!”
I turned around and then I saw her. A young girl who looked to be around the same age as Alice, maybe younger. Wearing all black, a dagger at her waist, I could tell immediately what she was. An assassin, just like me. Her fair golden locks cascaded across her shoulders and her beautiful cerulean eyes shimmered throughout the room. She was… beautiful.
“He’s remorseful… you shouldn’t kill him if he’s sorry.” Such innocent views on life… she reminds me of the old Alice. The one who got scared by the terrifying sight of blood. The one who still had some sanity left. It’s time to educate her on how cruel the world can really be. Then, with a swipe of my knife, I made a precise incision in the neck, making him cough for a second and fall onto the ground, lifeless.
Blood slowly stained the wooden floor, noting his timely death. As I turned around, I peered towards the girl. She didn’t look scared, nor did she appear to be distraught. She looked… angry. “Seems like we got double booked.” I muttered while putting on a smirk. I wonder how a girl like that can be an assassin. What a joke this profession has become.
