“You seem shook, Brian.” Nick grinned, smoking a cigarette outside of the tent. “She’s not normal. It’s like-” “… Andrea never died.” Nick let out a puff of smoke, grinning. “She needed to find some way to become immortal. But as time is the human’s natural enemy, she found a way to preserve herself… by transferring her skills to that girl.”
He shook his head. “She’s insane.” He grinned. “That insanity that you see… is the root of her knowledge and power. It’s something that we could never hope to understand. Put her in a mental hospital, she’ll be out by the morning. You can’t catch her, she’s cautious and calculating. She’s playful, just like Andrea.”
Meanwhile, I sat next to Noah on the grass, my hand flicking through the pages of a book while he ate up the lunch I prepared for him. “Did I ever tell you how good of a cook you are?” I shook my head and smiled. “Nope.”
I continued to read my book, smiling. “What are you so happy about?” I shook my head, continuing to smile. “Oh, nothing. It’s just that this event has turned onto quite the amusing game is all.”
He looked at me and couldn’t help but smile and lean back. “I feel like the world goes by two times faster in your head.” That’s because it does. “Really? Why would you think that?”
After that, we were given a lecture on military strategies. What a useless course. As Major Brian placed the pieces around the board, he then saw me reading my book at the back.
“Miss Scott. Care to have a game with me? Or is this too simple for you?” I closed my book over, tucking it under my arm as I walked towards the table. The game was simple. You take troops and invade different territories, rolling a dice. Whoever gets the higher numbers wins and invades the territory.
However, there are a limited amount of rolls. If you win, your count doesn’t decrease but if you lose, it does. You can’t get more rolls. When both opponents get zero rolls left, the territory is counted up and whoever has the most wins.
I looked around on the board, my eyes darting from side to side. He gestured towards the board, making me take the first move. I then placed a few pawns right at the border and then, we played.
At first, Brian dominated the field. Obtaining half of my territory, it was then time for a counter attack. With three of my dice rolls, I was able to regain my territory and more back. As we took our turns, it was easy for a baby to realise that I was winning.
Then, I went to perform the finishing move then he grabbed my wrist angrily. Squeezing it tightly, I then looked into his eyes. “It’s my turn.” It was like a spear had pierced his chest. He left go of my hand as I picked up the die and threw them. My die, the red one, landed on a five. And his die, the blue one, landed on a one. “Check… and mate.”
I beat a major, someone whose strategy should be unbreakable; in fact, I annihilated him. Some people were impressed but to the other majors, it was scary. The fact that a high school student could beat a major at a war game is terrifying… or humiliating.
