“Asami! Come on in and have a seat! I’m so glad that you could make it!” Lady Mimi’s enthusiastic voice at greeting me made me feel at ease as he gestured towards an empty seat next to Hikaru.
I sat down politely while Lady Mimi smiled at me then turned towards her husband. Reo Takahashi was not who I thought he’d be. His stoic expression had disappeared and there was even a smile as he watched his wife grin at me.
He must really love her… I wonder if Kai and I can be like that in the future. Lady Mimi smiled. “Honey, I’d like to introduce you to Asami. She’s the person who will travel for me so that I can visit the world without leaving these walls.”
His face turned towards me and stared at me intently. “That hair…” I tensed. “You come from the royal bloodline of the Azurai clan?” H-How did he figure that out?
I need to lie. Fast. “My mother told me that she was exiled from the Azurai clan years ago because she fell in love with a travelling merchant.” He nodded, making me relax a bit. After all, the Azurai clan is a rival of the Takahashi clan.
“I’m not here for information or to spy on you, My Lord. I’m here because I was a fresh start. A clean slate. Your reign has made it possible here.”
He looked at me, his eyes sharpened. “What guarantees my wife’s safety around you? What can you give me to show me that your alligance is no longer with them but with me.”
I don’t know… I don’t have anything of value… but I do have this. I looked up at him, determined. “I can give you my mind.” His eyes opened, amused.
“Your mind?” I nodded. He looked at me then burst out laughing. Even Lady Mimi tittered a bit. “I’m sorry, my husband is teasing you. Chiba already did a background sweep on you, he knows that you’re clean.”
Chiba did? Either he knows about my direct association with the Azurai clan or he didn’t find out. Somehow. By chance.
“Anyway, let dinner be served. I’m famished.” And just like that, I sat in silence while the family of four chattered and laughed, eating away.
I felt out of place but somehow, this showed me what a family actually looked like. Finally, Lady Mimi asked some personal questions.
“So, Asumi… you’re how old?” I smiled. “Seventeen.” “What about hobbies? What do you enjoy doing apart from travelling?” That was an easy question.
“I enjoy reading. Now that I’m staying here for a while, I’ll be able to grow a collection of books.” She smiled. “You’ve got a lot in common with Hikaru then.”
“What about your swordfighting? Who taught you?” Lord Reo asked. I should just answer truthfully. “My brother taught me. He always thought that I would be the better sibling, so he taught me most of what I know.”
Lady Mimi nodded. “Oh, so where is your brother now? Invite him to have tea sometime!” My expression then became a bit sad. “Unfortunately, we’re in a fight now… and I doubt that he’d come looking for me here.”
