“File?!” Adrian demanded when his eyes noticed a file in Amelia’s hand. Amelia could feel beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Why was he asking her file? It was not an interview yet he wanted her file. God knows what was on his mind. She was now aware of the impression he has on her. She didn’t know if he heeded to her words when she spoke that it was his grandmother who wanted her to work here. She didn’t know the consequences of showing her file to him and didn’t want to take risk with him, what if he finds her identity was fake? What if he comes to know about her identity and aware of her background, she would be forced to move to her place. Everything will be back to square one. She will have to face her nightmare turning into reality and there was no way she would let it happen. Amelia couldn’t help but think about the if’s.
“We don’t have all day now, do we?” Adrian exasperatedly spoke to her. Reluctantly, she released her tight grip on the file and having no other option other than giving him her file, she decided to pass the file in her hand, hoping, God would save her one last time. Even though her documents were fake, she didn’t want him to have a look.
“Oh cousin!!”
Amelia heard a voice as the door opened wide only to see a man standing at the door with a grin which instantly changed into a questionable look when the man’s eyes fell on Amelia, she sighed in relief from the man’s interruption.
“You are supposed to knock, Trevor.” Adrian rolled his eyes. Amelia, who was about to give her file to him, drew her arms against her, keeping the file on her lap as it was before, the file was in safe hands. She was thankful for Trevor’s presence at the right time and at the right place.
Wait. Cousin? They both are cousins? How did Skylar missed to tell her about Trevor and Adrian’s relation?
“Is she the one grandma spoke about?” Trevor asked Adrian as he stalked to a chair. Amelia watched him sit to her right side, after Adrian responded with a simple nod.
Trevor rubbed his temple observing the woman in front of him. Her silky hair was neatly combed into a braid leaving few strands on either side of her face. She was fair in complexion, dressed in a professional navy-blue skirt and a blazer over white shirt. Trevor’s eyes were not leaving her. The room was filled with unwanted silence which made her nervous. None of the men were speaking to her. One was Adrian, who was not lifting his eyes away from the computer. On the other hand, Trevor, whom she met a few days ago, was looking at her; not in a perverted way but as if he was studying her.
“You look familiar!” he mused. Amelia looked at him with a smile on her face. She understood why he was staring at her. He forgot their previous meeting. “I’m Skylar’s friend. You met me in the resort few days ago when…” Amelia’s words trailed and she paused when Adrian looked at her again. What’s with his attitude?! It was now getting on her nerves.
“Ahh…. I remember now. Sorry for not recognising you, so unlike me to forget such a beautiful face.” Trevor said winking at her.
“That’s alright!” Amelia replied not letting his wink affect her.
“So, you’re the angel who saved my grandmother.” Amelia blushed a little when he referred her as angel, but she didn’t miss the way Adrian rolled his eyes at Trevor’s comment.
“What are you doing here. Aren’t you supposed to be at construction site?” Trevor added.
“Umm… I’m here to submit my joining report.” Amelia answered.
“Here?” Trevor was baffled for a second but instantly, he understood when he looked at Adrian. Trevor didn’t know why Adrian called her to his cabin, but he surely knew that Adrian must’ve wanted to scare the shit out of the girl by warning not to take his project lightly. He was aware what kind of impression did his cousin has on Amelia, it wouldn’t take a genius to guess that he doesn’t like her.
“How’s your new life in Kinsale?” Trevor smiled. How did he know she was new here? Amelia’s eyes furrowed in confusion. Skylar must’ve have told, she thought.
“You’re new here?” Adrian frowned.
“It’s been few days since I shifted here,” Amelia answered.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?” Adrian asked with ferocity.
“You never asked me and I didn’t know you had a problem with me being shifted recently,” Amelia responded with a fake smile.
“I don’t understand what made grandma to give her this job,” Adrian muttered.
“Trust me, Sir. Even I felt the same,” she answered pursing her lips and shifted her gaze to see an amused Trevor. She didn’t know what was making the man smile, she was least bothered though.
“Very well. You can put the file on the desk. Adrian and I thought of going to the construction site today. Why don’t you join us? We can show you your workplace, what say?” Trevor had to interfere their conversation before it turned out into an argument but the fact that someone dared speak to Adrian boldly was something he never thought he would witness one day. Even men stuttered to speak with him. He was amused by Amelia’s quick and witty responses.
Amelia’s heart raced again when Trevor said her to put her file on the desk. She sighed and placed her file on the edge of the table when Adrian got up from his seat. Amelia saw him adjusting his suit. She didn’t want to admit but he was indeed handsome as always. She met him twice. The first time she met, it was on the coldest night. He wore a long coat which covered his body and now. The second time, she barely saw him but she knew he was in his track pants. And now, seeing him in a formal suit, she felt he looked good in everything he wore. Surprisingly, their dresses were matching; navy blue.
“I’m leaving. You better come quickly,” Adrian said to Trevor. Without delaying, he left the room in swift motion.
“So….” Trevor trailed off.
“Amelia. You can call me Amy,” Amelia smiled.
Trevor let a laugh out and gave her way to walk out, “After you.” Such a gentleman, Amelia thought.
Trevor dropped Amelia at the construction site. Their conversation was causal. He explained her about their resorts and the hotels. He told her how Adrian was passionate when it came to work, it only reminded her of someone in her life.
“We’re finally here, Angel,” Trevor said after stopping his car.
“It’s Amy,” Amelia laughed.
“I forget names. I can’t help it,” Trevor shrugged.
“So you call every girl Angel because you forget their names!” Amelia stated as they walked inside a building which was huge and incomplete.
“You’re a smart one,” Trevor answered to see Amelia chuckle.
“I don’t want any excuses. I need the blue print by the end of this week.”
Amelia heard Adrian’s voice as she followed Trevor, who opened the door for her. Amelia found an empty chair at the edge of the desk and occupied it. Amelia didn’t miss to notice the stares she received from people in the room. They looked at her, but none dared utter a word among themselves while Adrian was speaking to them.
“I am aware that it is difficult for you all to wait for my appointment. Even though I may not able to be in contact, one of my staff members will be in contact.” Adrian looked at Amelia for a mere second and then looked at the people who were listening to him. “Ms. Santiago would be in touch with your team leader and will update me about your work.” Adrian looked at her again but this time it was not just a glance, but he was staring at her expectantly. Amelia who was oblivious of his thoughts felt a bit weird because of his stare.
“Ms. Santiago would you like to talk something?” he asked her. So this was the reason why he was looking at her. He wanted her to speak to the team members. Did he expect her to understand his stare?
Amelia’s eyes winded at his words. Talk? What was she supposed to talk? She doesn’t even know what her job was and what does he mean by she would keep in touch with the team leader and would keep updating him. As far as she knew she came here to work as an interior designer not a mediator. Amelia stood on her feet and walked to where Adrian stood before he went back to his seat.
“Good morning everyone,” she greeted.
“I am Amelia…Ermm,” she paused and continued. “Amelia Santiago. I’m glad to be a part of your work and excited at the same time,” she smiled and saw the people in the room smile in return, well one person was exception. Amelia got up from her seat after the meeting ended. She didn’t know what happened before she and Trevor reached the under-construction site. They were late because, Trevor was driving slowly while he was explaining her about the Schneider’s business. Amelia rushed out of the room to follow Adrian who was about to get into his car.
“Mr. Schneider,” she said loud enough hoping he would hear her voice. Hearing someone calling his name, Adrian turned to see Amelia rushing towards him. “Why am I given a job as a mediator?” she questioned him.
Adrian slid both of his hands into his pocket before responding to her question. “Don’t forget that you are here only because of my grandmother and not by your qualifications which is why you will not be working with the team,” he answered and frowned when he saw her eyes roll, intolerable and contemptuous, he thought and continued. “But you will be in contact with them and inform me every detail regarding the plans on my resort,” Amelia stayed silent as he spoke to her. Why would he give her a job when he thinks she is not capable? She wanted to reject the job, but she didn’t. She wanted to show him that she was far better than those people in the meeting room.
“Understood,” she replied coldly not wanting to prolong their conversation.
She saw him getting into his car and the driver who was waiting for him, started the engine. She saw the car disappear into thin air and wondered did he ever spoke like a normal person instead of looking down at people. Why does he always have to act high and mighty?
“Looks like you are going to have a hard time dealing with the devil, Angel,” she heard a voice which belonged to Trevor. She chuckled at his comment, “I agree with what you say, he is a devil,” she remarked.
‘Let’s see who is going to have a hard time. The devil or the angel?’ Amelia had a smirk on her face while she said to herself.
