Adrian’s eyes were on the file. Even though he was going through it, he didn’t miss to notice her. The woman in front of him was dressed professionally. She was least bothered that he was her boss. The way she propped her chin on her hand looking at her watch from time to time showed her lack of interest. He shook his head and continued to look at the blueprints, the designs were not up to his expectations. He was not completely satisfied with the designs, the teams that were assigned for his new hotels and resorts were much better than the team who worked on the resort in Kinsale. At first, he wanted to tell Amelia that he wanted the team to redesign or change the team but ended up telling her to design. It wouldn’t be difficult for her to complete it within ten days as she only had to change few things, he thought so.
“Ten days?” Amelia repeated in disbelief. Does he take her for a human machine? How could he even expect her to complete within ten days?
“Why? Is it difficult for you?” Adrian raised his eyebrow challenging her capability.
Amelia snorted internally. “No, Mr. Schneider,” her reply was short and curt.
“Very well then. I am expecting new designs from you within ten days,” he replied. Amelia didn’t reply to his words instead, she got up from her seat and walked out of his room taking the files in her hand.
There was not even a single appreciable thing in Amelia. The woman was rude, irresponsible, her lack of interest shows that she doesn’t deserve this job but why did he tell her to design when he could’ve asked his team? That was because the company which was designing his resort is famous for interior designs whose owner was Trevor Wolfrick. So basically, they both were business partners. Every hotel and resorts he built until now, collaborated with Trevor’s company. Adrian could’ve told to make changes in a few days using his authority over the team, but it would surely take at least twenty days because the team that was assigned for the resort in Wickhurst belonged to one of Trevor’s branch which was in Dublin. Even if he wanted another team to assign for this project, it would take time and Adrian doesn’t want any delay in the construction of his resort. Amelia was in Wickhurst and would be available for him at any time. He didn’t doubt her capability because he never saw her work, but he wanted to see if the woman who was so proud of herself would be able to complete the work he gave. It was a risky task for him to believe in someone whose work he never witnessed, but the way she assigned the files for him and the notes she made for him to look at the designs to make it easy for him to understand whatever happened in the meetings he couldn’t attend. There was no need for her to maintain notes for him for every meeting she attended yet, she had done it. Her work made him to give her a chance, maybe she should be given a chance but that doesn’t mean he had a good impression on her.
Amelia was scribbling on her notes. She was frustrated at the way he spoke to her. Why couldn’t he talk to his team and change the plans if he didn’t like? How would she even do it when she has no idea about the things they spoke during their previous meetings. She didn’t have complete details but here she was sitting and scribbling nonsense on her notes. After thinking for more than two hours she opened the files and looked at the tick marks that Adrian made on the file he selected. She went through the plan for the second time, the first was when she was discussing with the team Trevor sent. She worked hard to complete the work he gave her. She knew it wasn’t her job to do but the man’s eyes spoke as if he was challenging her and she had to win it. Why did she have to take it seriously and accept without a second thought, it wasn’t her job, she could’ve rejected but she didn’t. Deep down, she wanted to do it because that is what she loved, loved to create something beautiful, a home like paradise. She spent days and nights with her laptop sketching the designs, she was exhausted but never regretted doing it.

Amelia has been waiting for his response for twenty minutes. Why does this man take too long to give a reply? Is it that difficult for him to speak atleast once? She was unable to wait, the dead silence in the room was making her nervous for unknown reason, but why?
“Mr. Schneider…” she decided to speak but was cut down when he interrupted.
“It’s a no,” his words were understandable but the meaning those words held were difficult for Amelia to understand.
“Sorry?” her eyebrows furrowed in disbelief to know what he meant. She was in no state to think and understand what he meant.
“I want you design it again, Ms. Santiago,” he simply stated.
“B… But….” Amelia’s heart felt heavy as his words repeated on the back of her head. She worked day and night to complete it only to be rejected?
Amelia tightened her fist. He was doing it on purpose. He wants to take revenge on her but why would he? She was just an employee to him.
“I don’t hold any grudge on you, Ms. Santiago,” his words came out as if he read her mind.
“Is that so?” she spat but maintained a composed face, she was his employee and she didn’t forget it.
“I hope you take your work serious, Ms. Santiago,” he added.
What?!? Does he think I don’t take my job seriously? Great.
She said to herself.
“You could’ve told me your ideas about your resort when I met you ten days ago, Mr. Schneider. None of us would’ve wasted our time,” she retorted.
“This place… I want it to be a place where people who come with their families can have memorable moments which lasts long. The ultimate goal is to create a paradise, Ms. Santiago. A paradise filled with happiness where they can forget their works, stress and problems. I want this resort to be different from any of my resorts. This place… is special and I want everything to be perfect…”
His words were simple, but they were something Amelia never expected from a man like Adrian. She was shocked to hear that the selfish man was talking about family and memories, surprisingly his words hit her hard. Family, memories, happiness. She has memories of having breakfast or dinner with her father but were those moments filled with happiness? After her mother’s demise, her father always discussed his work at the table with his secretary on phone. As a daughter she was proud that her father was a hardworking man but that doesn’t mean she was fine with him when he brought his works at the table too.
“Am I clear Ms. Santiago?” Amelia snapped out of her thoughts and nodded to his words. “Very well. I want them in four days,” he said. Seriously, this man is insane. He is taking her for a human machine, there was no doubt in it.
While walking out from his office, she came across Mr. Darcy, the head butler. “It’s good to see you again, Mr. Darcy,” Amelia greeted.
“So do I.” The man returned a polite smile. “Mrs. Schneider wants to meet you,” he informed. Why would the old woman want to meet her? How could she forget. She should’ve met her when she visited the mansion few days ago to thank her for the job, but she couldn’t because she was in a foul that the idea of meeting the old woman skipped out of her mind.
“I heard that Adrian ordered you to redesign,” Josephine, Adrian’s grandmother quired Amelia.
“He didn’t like my work too,” Amelia’s words came out in a whisper. She was dejected by that fact that her struggle was in vain.
“Amy…” the old woman spoke. “Don’t lose your confidence. He gave you four more days which means he is counting on you…” The old woman paused when she saw Amelia’s eyes staring at a photo that was attached to the wall.
The place in the photograph seemed familiar. Where did she see it? Amelia was trying to remember. It was a picture taken years ago, there was a tent where three people were holding their hands facing their back to the camera. They were looking at the blue water, there were mountains too. This picture… She tried to analyse, before she could sort her thoughts together, she heard the old woman’s voice.
“That’s my son with his wife and his son,” said the woman, what Amelia trying was to conclude.
“No wonder the place looks familiar,” Amelia answered in awe looking at the picture. “That is where he wants to build his resort.” No wonder the man wants it to be perfect, looks like he is very close with his family, she was a bit jealous of him looking at the picture.
“His parents died in an accident when he was young,” Amelia didn’t expect such reply from the old woman. She was aware that his father was no more in the world but knew nothing about his mother or the reasons of their death.
