As soon as she opened her door, she saw him stand in front of her room as if he was a remedy for her heart’s palpitation.
“Your phone,” she heard him speak, but it took her a second to react. Amelia didn’t know what to say and how to react, all she could do was nod and take her phone from him which was ringing continuously louder than her heart beat at this moment. She attended her call while Adrian stood taking a support of the wall while looking at her. She was conscious about his presence and didn’t know how to avoid his gaze over her but somehow she managed to turn away from him.
“Mr. Griffin,” Adrian heard her speak to the person who called her and understood that it was Leonard Griffin, the man who borrowed Amelia’s car. If only he saw the man asking her car, things would’ve been different. He would’ve arranged a car for Leonard and the girl would’ve reached her home by now instead of being stuck with him in this cottage.
“You don’t have to worry about me, Mr. Griffin. I reached home. Mr. Schneider dropped me,” Amelia lied and used his name because people who were working at the site saw her getting into his car. Adrian who was standing behind her, could sense the awkwardness in her tone when she lied.
“You don’t have to apologize, Mr. Griffin,” Adrian heard their conversation. The man name Leonard Griffin said to Amelia that he wanted to take her out for lunch as he was apologetic for not returning early.
Even though the man’s voice was disticit, Adrian understood where the conversation was going and for some reason, the thought of Amelia going for a lunch with a man brought an instant frown on his face.
“I… I will let you know if I can go out with you,” Amelia spoke softly even though she felt a little uncomfortable while talking to the man. After exchanging few words, Amelia ended the call.
“Mr. Griffin called me to apologise,” Amelia said with a light chuckle not giving him much details but Adrian was aware of their conversation. Before Amelia could speak something, they heard a thunderous sound and everything turned dark.
“What did just happen?” Amelia asked, though she couldn’t see Adrian because of the darkness.
“Maybe the electricity pylons must’ve crashed to the ground,” he said in a casual tone.
“Are you serious?” Amelia asked him in shock and started to walk taking support of the wall. She was not scared of darkness but the thought of spending a night in the darkness with the man in front of her didn’t settle well in her mind.
“May be? What do you mean by maybe. I don’t_” Amelia’s voice echoed in the room.
Amelia and Adrian turned their heads when they heard someone enter into the house. Amelia became alert as if the person was a thief but the person who came inside was the security guard with a torch in his hand.
“The lamp posts and telephone lines are ripped out because of the strong wind, Sir,” the guard informed. “We have to wait until morning, the generator is under repair for quite some time now.”
“Bring the torch lights,” Adrian said.
“That… Sir. There are no torch lights in the house. There is only one,” the man replied, showing the torch in his hand.
He was the man who informed about the collapsed tree a while ago. Why does this guard always inform bad news, Amelia rolled her eyes.
” If you were aware the generator is not working, why didn’t you inform Trevor or me?” Adrian words came out in a serious tone, making the guard tremble in fear.
“There are candles in the hall. Maybe we could use them,” Amelia interrupted to help the poor guard who stood with his head down. “Could you please light the candles?” she asked the guard who instantly went to bring the scented candles that were kept on the galss table.
With the scarce amount of light from the torch, Amelia walked towards the stairs and turned on her phone which wasn’t helpful because she almost tripped because of something in her way.
“Stay where you are and don’t move. We don’t want you to sprain your ankle again now, do we?”
If it was not Adrian who got hold of her hand, the girl would’ve been on the cold floor by now.
Amelia released herself from his grip instantly when he touched her. It was not because she hated it, the reason was her heart beat accelerated at his slightest touch on her hand. The guard brought few candles and lit them in their rooms and also near the stair case. Satisfied that there was enough light in the room now, Amelia felt relief rush all over her body. While Adrian was speaking to the guard, Amelia picked a candle which was beside a statue when her eyes captured a painting portrait which was hung on the wall along with other portraits. She could tell the paintings were old, maybe ten years old? She was not sure. A beautiful woman was painted with different colours, her eyes were blue and her beautiful tresses reaching waist, there was a warm smile on the woman’s lips.
After she looked at every stroke of the brush in the beautiful woman’s painting, she walked past one after the other and stopped to see one particular painting. What made her movements halt was not the painting but the letters on the portrait.
Adrian Schneider?
She asked in her mind but didn’t speak until the guard left. After the guard left, Amelia decided to speak her mind out.
“These paintings__”
She was curious to ask the man who stood behind her about the paintings, so she turned around to see Adrian.
“You.. Painted them?” she asked him to confirm, she couldn’t believe that the man could paint too.
“Hmm…”
“This….” Amelia wanted to ask him about the painting that caught her eyes at first. She lifted her free hand to point at the portrait of the beautiful woman whose features were familiar to someone she knew.
“My mother,” Adrian could tell that she was fascinated by the art and he answered looking at his mother’s portrait.
“She is beautiful,” Adrian heard the girl who stood next to him, praise his mother.
“Indeed.” He had a smile on his face which didn’t break through his lips. Amelia continued to see the photo frames that were hung on the wall. There was only one picture of his mother and that was the painting. She wondered why there were no photo frames of his family members on the wall or anywhere in the mansion.
“I have a very few memories of my mother. I was eight years old,” she spoke, touching a sculpture with the tips of her fingers. “She was sick all the time. I was not allowed to meet her whenever I wanted because she needed to rest after taking medicines. I had a very few memories with her and the worst part is, as I grew up my memories with my mother started to fade away one after the other.”
After walking to certain distance, Amelia turned around to see Adrian only to find herself looking at him whose eyes were already on hers, watching her with his dark eyes with an unreadable expression.
A faint smile appeared on Amelia’s lips as she continued, “There were times I wondered about few things when I recollected about my mother, if it was a dream or was it a memory of mine.” She sighed and continued to walk towards a window.
Adrian saw the girl who was walking aimlessly. It was the first time she shared something about her life to him but what surprised him was that he was interested to listen to her. He never liked meddling into someone’s life but this girl was making him to have an urge to know more about her.
“You’re mother must’ve felt proud to see your painting,” Adrian heard Amelia speak to him about his mother’s painting.
“She never saw it,” Adrian replied, walking towards her on the cold floor. He recollected the time when he completed his mother’s painting, he wanted to show his mother that day. He eagerly waited for her return to see her proud smile for her son had painted her but who would’ve thought that she would never return to him again. The young boy’s heart was crushed by the news of his parents death. “My parents met with an accident before I could show it to them.” Amelia could feel the pain that weighed in his words even though she knew about his parents, a part of her heart felt heavy when he said.
“I’m sure they would’ve been proud of you,” she said to make him feel better. She didn’t know if it worked but she was happy that she was able to see a different side of Adrian tonight.
The pitter-pattering of the rain continued, Adrian stood next to her in silence. She could see his face from one side because of the light luminated from the candles. She had no clue why was she unable to stop thinking about this man. If possible, she wanted to know everything about his life one day to share his happiness as well as his sorrows.
Share happiness and sorrow? What was she even thinking? She was thinking unnecessary things, she said in her mind.
“Are you fine?” she heard him ask her which only made her heart flip over and over.
“I’m fine,” she muttered under her breath which only made him to turn to look at her. She could feel her heart beating loud making her chest ache slightly. Was she going to have a heart attack?
