Amelia was going through the information that was written about hotels and the resorts under Adrian’s name. Since she was new and had no knowledge about his business, she thought it would be better to have a little information about him and his business. She found a magazine on an empty desk in his office and picked it up to pass her time for a few minutes. Judging by the book, none of the people who visited his office must’ve touched the magazine, she thought. The pages were sticked together while she was turning the pages which made her believe it was left untouched. Amelia knew him as a rich business man who took over his father’s business, which is why she didn’t find any thing impressive about Adrian when Skylar told about him, it was the time when she was new to Kinsale. But after going through the articles that were written on him, Amelia was astonished to see the young man has surpassed his father in terms of business. Adrian has not only handled his father’s business which was shipping and trading company but also he established his name in food chain business.
While waiting for Adrian in his office, Amelia continued to flip the pages of the magazine in her hand. She let out a small laugh to see the man’s expressions in the pictures, it was clear that he didn’t go to any photoshoot because every picture was candid where a smile was lacking on the handsome young man’s face. There was not even a single picture where he had a smile. She wondered why doesn’t he smile often when he had a charming one. There was nothing about his personal life or a rumour about him with a girl which made her smile grow deeper but a second later, she sighed pushing back her tingling thoughts after realising the reality. After closing the magazine and placing it back where she had found, Amelia turned to see the young man about whom she was thinking a few seconds ago. He was standing at the door way with his gaze on her and his expressions were unreadable and she had no clue what was going on his mind at this moment. How come she didn’t feel his presence and since when was he standing? She stiffened and took a few steps back as she was standing near the entrance.
“Good morning, Mr. Schneider,” she greeted, politely with a half smile. Amelia saw him looking at the magazine and then at her which didn’t take more than a second.
“I hope you had a good time reading the magazine,” Amelia scrunched her brows when she heard him speak. She didn’t know why, but she felt something held in his words, a different meaning.
“I was just going through your information. I was quite surprised to see that you surpassed your father’s business,” Amelia spoke politely again, giving him a little compliment which she never gave at least not to him.
The man didn’t wait until she completed her speech, he walked past Amelia and then she followed him. As he opened the door of his chamber, she heard him speak to her in nonchalance. “And that made you laugh?”
Amelia didn’t know what else to say as the man had completey misunderstood her as always. “I didn’t see you smile in any picture and that made me laugh,” she admitted, hoping he wouldn’t misunderstand her. She knew he would glare at her for such comment but she felt it was better to tell the truth than him misunderstanding her.
“Why? Are you eager to see me smile?” Amelia who hadn’t thought to receive such response from him, now had a faint splash of pink on her cheeks. She didn’t know how to react to his comment because that was something she didn’t expect from him.
“I… I didn’t mean that,” Amelia tried to prove her innocence but it only made him to cock his head to look at her, stopping whatever he was doing. Amelia scolded herself for stuttering and reminded not to get affected by his presence.
“I was only joking, you don’t have to take it serious,” he drawled, picking up few files from the shelf.
He calls it a joke? Until today, she didn’t know such phrases comes under a joke
“I must admit. Your jokes are terrorizing, Mr. Schneider,” she let a dry laugh, playing a safe game.
“I am aware of it,” he replied and gave her few files. “These are the plans related to the new projects, you can look at the designs to have an idea and go through these cassets. Follow me,” he said, walking out of his room. The cassets he gave her were the videos of the meeting which Adrian didn’t attend. He wanted Amelia to make a short notes on whatever happened in the meetings so that he could go through them later, it would save his time.
Amelia followed Adrian to another room which was adjescent to his room. The room was spacious but not as big as Adrian’s room. Her smile widened at the thought of having her own cabin. She looked around, there was a TV attached to the wall, a desk and a chair was beside a closed window. There was everything that was necessary for her in the room. Judging the things around her, she thought that everything looked new in the room, did he arrange it for her? But it was only yesterday she had agreed to work with him, she doubted if everything here was bought only for her. She has her own desk, Amelia thought.
“If you need any help, you are free to ask me,” Adrian looked at the girl who had her eyes on the plain desk. Was she happy because of the desk? Adrian who saw her looking at the desk which was placed opposite to the door, asked himself. Out of all the things he had prepared for her, the girl had her eyes only on the desk.
Strange girl, he said to himself. Of all the luxurious things in the room, the girl was happy for an empty desk.
“Thank you,” he saw a smile on her pink lips, her eyes were brighter than he had ever seen, was it because she was smiling or was it because he started to observe her every movement closely?
Amelia sat on her desk after Adrian left to his cabin. She relaxed on the chair and swirled twice on the wheeled chair. These were the little things she needed in her life. She never wanted to take over her father’s business and command everyone, all she wanted was to do something she liked to do. It wasn’t a bad idea to work with him, she grinned at her thought and looked to her left side only to see Adrian facing her. The bright smile on her lips had fallen to see the glass window between the two rooms. The blinds between the glass door was pulled up, why did she have to be seated at a place where he could see her? She shut her eyes and turned her head forcefully, to look at the files in front of her. A sudden urge grew in her to look at his side again but reminded herself again, do not get affected by his presence. After chanting it like a mantra, she took a deep breathe before picking up a file. May be focusing on her work would make her forget everything around her.
Adrian who was on a call with one of his clients ended the call and raised his head to see the girl who was in another room, he could see that she was immersed in her work even though only half of her face was visible to him. He was not sure if it was a good idea to keep her close to him but he had his own reasons to make her work with him. The girl always had a presence about her, a sort of strange restrained vibrancy. Especially, the way she speaks with confidence and walks elegantly like a noble lady and her manners were always cautious. She was no princess but surely hails from a respected family. Adrian wondered what could be the reason she was in Kinsale, the question didn’t occur to him once or twice, he asked himself numerous times whenever he looked at her. At first, he was least bothered even though he found her suspicious but as days passed, he started to observe her without his knowledge. The girl was an enigma, a mystery which he was yet to solve.
