As soon as Amelia and Adrian entered into the hall where the party was taking place, they were welcomed by two ladies. Unlike other guests who were asked to show their invitation cards at the entrance by the security guards, Adrian being a well known person in the business field was allowed to enter without any invitation card, though he had one with him. Amelia had no clue who was holding the party and for what reason. The only thing she knew was that one of Adrian’s client had invited him. As it wasn’t her place to inquire, she didn’t make an attempt to ask him any questions regarding the party or the people who were attending tonight.
Amelia followed behind Adrian as he led the way. A soft music was being played and she found few couples were on the dancing floor. Adrian was greeted by few people who received a simple nod from him. Amelia looked around and realised that it was his client’s anniversary. This wasn’t even a party related to work, she looked at him accusingly.
“This party is not related to work,” Adrian heard her speak. She was glaring at him but Adrian who didn’t seem to be bothered by her glares, picked two glasses on juice from the waiter who came to serve them drinks. Adrian gave one glass to Amelia who then mumbled a thank you and waited for his answer.
“This is my client’s party, so it is related to work,” Adrian reasoned but Amelia was not satisfied with the reason he gave her.
“That doesn’t make sense, Mr. Schneider,” she rolled her eyes in exasperation. The previous day, he clearly said to her it was a party related to work and the company would bare the expenses of her dresses but this nowhere looked like a party related to work and there was no need for her to attend it.
“May be you should start having fun since you are here,” Adrian spoke as he took a sip from his glass.
“Oh really? With whom?” she asked looking at him. How does he want her to have fun when she doesn’t know anyone in the room?!
“With me of course,” she saw him smirk. What did he just say? Amelia looked away from him before a tiny smile played on her lips for a second.
“That would be the last thing I would do, Mr. Schneider,” she replied playing with her glass and heard him snort at her comment but the fact was that she liked him when he comments in this way, it shows a different side of him which she had witnessed a few times before. If it was any other day, she would’ve received silent treatment from him or cold glares.
Unable to stand in silence, Amelia spoke. “They look as if they want to show off their wealth,” Adrian followed her gaze to see one circle of a crowd. The women who wore expensive jewellery, were showing off their necklace and ear rings to each other and giggling without any reason.
“That’s the reason why they attend the parties,” Adrian shrugged. He was used to see such things and it wasn’t new for him. It shouldn’t be new for her too, he thought.
“That’s the reason I hate these parties. My father used to force me to attend parties but as I grew up he stopped taking me to which I was grateful to him.” Amelia blurted out and didn’t even realise what she had said until she heard him speak.
“Hmm. What does your father do?” his question made her mind blank for more than a second. She shouldn’t have opened her mouth to speak.
“Why are you interested to know?” she simply avoided his question and looked away but the man didn’t shift his gaze from her. What is she even trying to hide, he thought. It was only making him curious about her, he wanted to know everything about her.
“Just curious.” Why would he be curious about her. Amelia didn’t know how long she was going to hide from him and from her father. She didn’t want to see him hate her for lying to him.
“Being inquisitive can get you into unwanted troubles,” Amelia didn’t look at him while speaking.
‘What if I am ready to face it?’ asked Adrian to himself but didn’t let it out for her to hear.
Amelia brought the crystal glass to her lips to savour the flavour of the juice and when she emptied it, she went to put the glass on a table where there was a tray with empty glasses, Mean while, Adrian was greeted by a few men who spoke to him about his new project and congratulated him for his success, not wanting to interrupt their conversation, Amelia stood at a corner to wait for Adrian. A few minutes later, when Adrian started to search for her, he saw a young man talking her. He didn’t know what made her smile but he didn’t like it one bit. Why would she smile in front of a stranger? Adrian excuses himself from the men and marched towards Amelia.
“…. I would like to have a dance with you, Ms. Santiago,” She even told her name to this young man? Adrian left a frustrated sigh before interrupting their coversation.
“You will have to find another partner, Mister. She is mine,” stated Adrian intruding their little conversation and then he added, “my partner for tonight.” Adrian wanted to understand the man what he meant by ‘mine’. There was no way he would let her dance with someone else other than him.
Ignoring the man’s presence, Adrian looked at Amelia and extended his hand. “Would you care for a dance with me?” he asked Amelia but he took her hand taking her to the dance floor before she could respond.
Amelia who was taken by surprise at his actions couldn’t think properly but that didn’t mean she would’ve rejected him if she could think. Her mind was blank and her feet and hands froze like ice cube not because of the climate but because of Adrian who had asked her to dance with her and the way he spoke to the young man. When they were on the dance floor, she felt his fingers trace her skin causing goosebumps all over her body. He took her tiny fingers into his warm hand melting her frozen palms with his; and then he pulled her towards him to fill the gap between them with his another hand that rested on her back. Amelia had no clue of what was happening around her in that moment.
“I presume you know how to dance,” he whispered to her, when he saw her grasping his move quickly.
“I do. I was taught,” she replied under her breathe but didn’t give him much details. She had a dance teacher who used to teach her dance at her home when she was a teenager.
“You were taught? I’m surprised,” he commented and twirled her twice before pulling her back to him. Amelia said she was taught which means either it was in her school or she must’ve went to the dance classes and he clearly knew that girls from higher class were taught dance at a young age.
“There’s nothing to be surprised about it.” When he pulled her, her hands fell on his chest to take support but she removed instantly.
“For how long did you live in London?” he asked staring into her eyes. Amelia didn’t know why he was asking her at this moment. She was concentrating on her steps and his questions made her to lose her concentration and ended stamping his foot by mistake.
“I’m sorry. Did I hurt you?” she asked him out of concern. Is he going to be angry at her now?
“That’s alright,” he said as if nothing had happened.
“Since I was born,” she replied to see him nod thoughtfully. What was he thinking?
Amelia looked away. She wondered how many people had seen them dancing in this way. Just like Amelia had thought, there were men and women who didn’t stop having more than a glance at them. A surprised look was written all over their faces to see Adrian Schneider dancing with a girl.
Like a game of whispers, the guests who were in the party passed messages about the unknown girl. Some said she might be his fiancee while the other denied saying she must be a date for the night but then, he never brought any woman to the parties before and there was no news of him dating a woman since the past two years. There was one rumour where he dated a celebrity but there were no proofs. It was well known to the people that he kept his personal life in dark, may be he dated a handful of women but never let the rumours spread out. The gossip-mongers didn’t stay quite and continued to spread false information. Of all the theories the people had made, no one had thought that she was his employee because of the way she gracefully carried her red gown; redefining elegance and divinity. The boldness in her sparkling eyes, her cheeks with a little touch of make up and the long tresses of her hair were locked into a bun with pins. She looked like a piece of a priceless art. An art which the young man who was dancing with her didn’t want anyone to touch or look at it.
While Adrian was dancing with her, he didn’t fail to notice that numerous pairs of eyes gawking at the girl he had brought with him, she had no clue of the attention she was gaining by her mere presence since the time they entered together in the room. When Adrian shot death glares at a few men who were ogling at her, they averted their gazes from her and pretended they were enjoying the party. He shouldn’t have brought her, he sighed internally but he had to bring her because she is a part of the project, he convinced himself with such thoughts. Adrian knew that he cannot keep Amelia by his side the entire night in the party because he had to meet other people who would probably try to get close to her and gain her attention which would only make his blood boil. Never did he feel this way to anyone, these kind of feelings were foreign to him.
“Why is everyone staring at us?” Amelia asked him under her breath. Her voice was low but not too low because Adrian heard her.
“They are staring at you,” Adrian answered making her look at him quizzically. Why would they even look at her when he was beside her, she thought.
“I am a mere employee. Why would they even…”
“You know that, they don’t,” before Amelia could tell him as to why would they even look at her, he spoke twirling her for one last time before ending the dance.
“It has been a pleasure to dance with you,” he came close to her ear and whispered before stepping away from her.
