Amelia was seated in front of the mirror while she was staring at her reflection. Her hair was uneven, the errant strands were on either side of her face. The dress she wore now had traces of mud and the lace at the bottom was torn a little. The previous night’s events turned from bitter to sweet. Adrian didn’t even question her about the incident but made sure she was fine. It would’ve been very uncomfortable for her to explain him if he had asked her at that moment. After spending a night outside, they both returned to the farm house by taking a bus and Adrian’s driver came to pick them up after getting down the bus.
When they were in the bus, Amelia made sure to stay awake while he was resting on her shoulder but she didn’t know when sleep took over and she opened her eyes only when they reached their destination, she wondered what must’ve Adrian thought after waking up. He must be aware that he slept on her shoulder right? She asked herself but when she looked at Adrian’s composed face, she doubted if he was aware of it. The ride on their way back to farm house was silent because Adrian didn’t even open his eyes as he was asleep. Amelia who saw his eyes closed, thought he must’ve been tired for he had slept in the bus and even in the car but what she didn’t know was his eyes didn’t close after she had drifted into sleep. When he realised that she was asleep, he moved a little away to see her sleep in peace. When Adrian gave a thought, he realised that he doesn’t even remember when was the last time he had spent his time in someone’s company for more than three hours, it was usually business meetings. The little things she wanted to experience in life made him smile. Her wishes were simple, he wondered how can a person wish for such simple things in their life, may be sometimes we all wish to lead a simple life, don’t we?
Amelia have been sitting on the dressing stool for more than twenty minutes removing the pins from her hair one after the other, her right hand was paining whenever she tried to lift her hand. She wanted to have a look at the bruise which must’ve formed when Jonathan pushed her to the wall. After her hair rolled down to her shoulder, she tried to open the zip of her dress but she failed to do so, with much efforts, she unzipped her dress with her left hand before taking a quick shower. She tried to see the bruise but she wasn’t able to see it completely. Thinking it would take at least a week to heal by it self, Amelia walked out of her room. She took the stairs and went down to see Adrian at the dinning table. She made her way to the kitchen, not bothering what he was doing, all she wanted was to have something right now. She looked around and found bread and butter in the fridge.
“Do you want to tell me anything?” Amelia was startled by the tone he used.
Amelia gave a thought, was there anything to tell him? Nothing. There was nothing she wanted to tell him. “I don’t think I have anything to tell you,” she answered him but doubtfully. It was as if she was asking herself.
“What are you doing here?” It was clear that he was in a foul mood and she wondered what could be the reason then again she thought when was he not in such mood.
“I was only making breakfast. You could’ve spoken normally instead of scaring me, Mr. Schneider,” Amelia gritted her teeth and continued to apply butter on the bread before pausing. “Do you want to eat?” she asked him. Before Adrian could reply to her, he received a call and then left the kitchen without giving an answer to her question. She made coffee for herself and came out of the kitchen with toasted bread and coffee to have them peacefully at the table.
Adrian was still on the call when she decided to read the newspaper. Picking the paper that was on the other side of the table, she turned the pages and choked out when she came across a picture of Adrian dancing with her. The head lines stated about the young business man’s mysterious girlfriend. It also stated about his secret little rendezvous with the girl, it was rubbish and not even a single information was true. After reading the column for more than thrice, she looked upto Adrian for an explanation.
“How did this even happen?” Amelia asked him in disbelief when Adrian came to dinning table after ending the call.
“Is it still paining?” he asked her, ignoring her question. Her hand was in pain, he could tell that by the way she was lifting her cup.
She wanted to say she was fine but she swallowed those words, there was no doubt he would press her wrist again to test her if she was saying the truth. “Only a little,” she mumbled to see him nod as if he guessed it right.
Amelia now understood his reason for his foul mood early in the morning. She did not know what to say about it after he ignored her question blatantly even after he heard her.
“Come with me,” he said and she followed him after having the last bite of her bread leaving the empty cup on the table. He was heading towards her room and she wondered what was on his mind right now.
“Take a seat,” she heard him speak and the next moment, he pulled out a drawer and took out first aid box. Was he going to aid her? But the way he said sounded as if he had such plans. Amelia sat on the stool when she saw him pull a chair beside her.
“I’m fine I don’t think my wrist needs a medication, it’ll heel by tomorrow…” her words trailed away when Adrian decided to speak.
“How’s the pain on your back?” She didn’t expect him to remember such minor details. She mentioned only once about her pain but who knew that the man would note every single detail about the girl in front of him.
“It is fine. I’m sure it’ll heal by itself within a week,” Amelia gave a feeble smile but Adrian had other intentions on his mind.
“Let me see your wound,” Amelia was gobsmacked by his statement. When Amelia was not responding, a sigh eluded from his lips.
“Do you trust me?” His voice was soft as he asked her. Amelia was not dumb to not understand where the conversation was going and the truth was that she trusted him at the same time she was nervous. “Can l?” he asked and waited for her permission and the girl gave it with a simple nod and slowly turned to face the mirror allowing him to see her bruise that was on the back of her shoulder.
Adrian who took her silence as a yes, made his way to the hook of her dress to unhook a button before unzipping till where it was needed. His fingers pushed the dress aside a little to see her fair skin which was now replaced by a bluish mark on it. His jaw clenched to see the marks on her skin. Not wasting a second, he opened the box and took a cotton and then he poured few drops of a liquid to apply it on her exposed skin. She didn’t protest but stayed in silence with her hands clutched onto her dress.
She felt the cotton on her skin. It was cold and the next moment, she felt a burning sensation over her back. “What kind of medicine is this?!” she muttered under her breath but her question was ignored again when he was spreading the liquid with a cotton. When she thought it was over, Adrian did something she never expected from him. He softly blew air on her shoulder to lessen the burning sensation before he looked at her reflection through the mirror. Even when the windows were opened from where the cold wind was blowing, Amelia’s body was burning hot.
“Does it feel good now?” he asked her in obliviousness to what extent he was affecting her right now. Can he just stop giving her heart attacks?! Her heart was flipping over and over but there was no change on his face, may be even if a tornado comes in his way, he might have the same expression. It was getting on her nerves now that only she was feeling this way.
When Adrian was done applying the medicine, he zipped her dress again. Amelia’s breathe hitched and her face turned red like a tomato, there was no way she would be looking at him right now knowing that the man’s eyes were fixed towards the mirror while working on her zip.
True to his words, Adrian aided her wound and stepped away from her to put the medicine back in the first aid box. It was at that moment when Amelia exhaled deeply as she has been holding back her breath while he was treating on her wound.
“You don’t have to think about the news, I will handle it. Pack your luggage and be ready by eight in the evening,” Adrian informed her. She felt a pang of pain that their visit to London would end today. Adrian would leave to another country as Cain was back to work and she would leave to Kinsale as there was need for her presence.
Amelia could only swallow the bile that was formed in the throat. She didn’t have the courage to look at him at this moment. It was true that she agreed to let him treat her wound but who would’ve expected the after affects. Strangely, she felt nothing like what she felt when Jonathan tried to touch her. Adrian was careful with his every movement, there no feeling of disgust instead she felt sparks with his single touch.
After Adrian left the room leaving her alone, Amelia took her time to process her mind. She was clear about Adrian on her mind but the question was what does he think about her. She had no answer, it was true that he was different with her previous night. He was comfortable and neither did he avoid her questions nor did he show his cold attitude towards her but she didn’t know what would happen once they return Kinsale. Keeping her thoughts about Adrian aside, she decided to ask the maid named Mariah to do her a favour.
