Amelia sat in her father’s study room. After reaching her home, Amelia demanded for her father’s presence and Stephen who picked her up informed her that Roman was in his room and would come down in a few minutes until then the man requested Amelia to wait in Roman’s study room since the man didn’t want the workers to know their conversation.
Amelia looked around the room. Though it was her home, she doesn’t even remember the last time she came to the room. She found a little girl and her mother’s pictures in the room, hung on the walls in photo frames. She was the little girl in the pictures. Then there was a picture where she held a butterfly between her fingers. She remember the moments vividly. Her mother was the one who clicked the picture of her and her father had told her to free the butterfly saying the butterfly was meant to fly and not to be caged.
“But it is unable to fly. I’m only trying to help it from falling down,” said the little girl with a pout on her face.
“It will fly. It needs a little time to flap it’s wings and fly high,” replied her father with a gentle smile.
But the man who told her these words caged her within his territory, by not letting her flap her wings to see the world and when she finally flew away, she was caught in his trap again. She missed her father, the one who smiled in the pictures when her mother was alive. She never understood what made her father change but now that she know what it means to love a person, she understood what kind of impact he had on him when her mother died in his arms.
But that doesn’t mean he could shut himself and not anyone or even her, his own daughter. She knew that her father did it to make her come to London and he did love her but the way he chose to do was wrong and she would never take his side no matter what his reasons were.
Just when Amelia was looking at the pictures, she turned her head to see the man walk into the room. She noticed that he looked weak and her eyes narrowed at his movements. Roman who had came to know from Adrian that his daughter left the hospital doubted if she had heard their conversation. Her phone was in the room and surely she must’ve come back but he hoped she didn’t hear any of their conversation but then she did. She always ran away whenever she had to face something difficult and this time too, she did the same. But at this moment, she was standing in front of him.
He knew his ways were wrong but he was least bothered about it. Right or wrong, his daughter was in front of him and that is all he wanted. It was true that he didn’t want to disturb her peaceful life in Kinsale but a few days before he had fallen sick and had to admit in the hospital. He was old now and the need to see his daughter was growing day by day. He knew if he asked his daughter to come and meet, she would’ve come but that would only be a short period. Wanting to see his daughter, he decided to trick his maid who was close to Amelia and then Adrian who would surely inform the news to Amelia. He thought his plan worked but everything fell apart.
Though he looked like a man with evil intentions, he was concerned about his daughter. After getting a heart attack for the first time in his life, he decided to marry her for her own good but the girl was against him and he was angry. He should’ve at least listened to her but he didn’t.
Roman was a kind of man about whom one could not tell if he was a good man because of his devious ways.
“Why don’t you take a seat,” he said to her before taking his chair. He took something out of his pocket and placed it on his desk, it was her phone.
“Why don’t you explain me everything,” Amelia demanded after looking at her phone.
“I am sure you know why I had to do it, Amy,” he spoke in a calm voice and lit a cigar.
“Why father. Why would you go to such an extent. A call would’ve been enough for me to meet you. I would’ve been happy to meet you,” Amelia asked him.
“But would you have stayed back in London?” the man asked.
She wouldn’t have stayed back, thought Amelia to herself.
“I don’t want to be caged here again father. A butterfly is meant to fly and not to be caged, papa. Weren’t you the one who told me this,” she repeated the words he once said to her.
Roman who had been looking at the window, turned her head to look at her. Was it she felt here, a cage?
“I never caged you, Amy. I was only protecting you,” he replied, puffing on his cigar.
“Protect me? Protect me from what father? Don’t I have a right to live my life and make choices of my own. You made me a part of your deal to a man who wanted a land. How could you?” she asked him, her hands were on his desk as she spoke to him. “You and Adrian lied to me about everything. Why did you two have to lie to me when you both could’ve told me the truth. I trusted him, papa. I loved him and he… he lied to me. You both did,” Amelia ended up crying though she tried her best to control herself.
Roman felt his hand burn a little when the edge of his cigar touched his finger. She loved Adrian? He didn’t know about it until this very moment.
“Adrian has nothing to do…”
“No. Don’t take his sides. He knew about me and he chose to play along with you. You’ve won as always, here I am in front of you just like you wanted,” Amelia looked at him, making Roman speechless. That was not how he wanted, when he decided to bring his daughter back, he didn’t expect he would hurt her. He only thought about him and not her, he failed to be a good father again, he realised.
“I’m sorry,” his voice sounded apologetic and so did his eyes. But Amelia shook her head and left his room after taking her phone along with her before she rushed to her room.
After coming back to her room, she saw her phone when a name appeared on the screen, it was Adrian. She didn’t want to talk to him or return to Kinsale again, she didn’t want to stay here either but she had no other choice right now.
Adrian was at his company. He tried calling again Amelia but she wasn’t taking his call no matter how many times he called her. He needed to explain that everything he had told her was not a lie, she was assuming everything before he could even tell her.
When Amelia saw his name appear on her phone again. She decided to take the call and end it.
“Adrian…”
“Before you end the call, let me Explain, Amelia,” Adrian who was other side of the phone, got up from his seat as soon as Amelia attended his call.
“Adrian, please, I don’t want to listen to your explanations. I’m not ready,” Amelia’s words were broken. “Please don’t call me again. And don’t try to talk to me again,” saying, she ended the call.
He could understand that she was heart broken to see her father lied to her and the fact that he hid everything from her but he need to tell her that he never wanted to lie, in fact to was going to tell her everything that very night. It was true that he was attracted to towards Amelia before he knew about her but it was after he came to know about her did he decide to put things into motion between them. But as quick as things started between them, they fell apart because of a misunderstanding that was yet to be solved between them.
