When I opened my eyes, I was no longer on one of the park benches. I was lying on a bed and half of my body was covered with a white sheet. I tried to sit up to see where I was and to know if Tobias was with me. .
– Miss\, you shouldn’t sit down yet. – said one person. I think it was a nurse.
– Where’s my cousin? – I asked when I looked around and didn’t see him.
– Is that boy your cousin? – she asked. She looked a little confused.
– Yes. – I replied.
– He went out to buy something. He must be coming back. – she answered.
As soon as she finished speaking, Tobias opened the door. Upon seeing me awake, I realized that he took a deep breath, I think he was relieved.
– How are you ? – he asked me when he hugged me.
His arms were so strong and he was warm. It was the first time I was hugged that way, I didn’t want him to let go.
– I’m fine. What happened? Where we are ? – I asked a little confused by the situation.
– You passed out because your blood pressure dropped when the adrenaline left your brain too fast. I carried you to the park infirmary. I’m sorry\, I just wanted you to have a perfect birthday\, but I ended up screwing it up. – he said with a sad look in his eyes.
– Tobias\, you’re not to blame for anything. And I’m fine. We can go on other toys. You don’t know how happy I am that you brought me here. – I said smiling trying to cheer him up. After all\, I was really happy and I didn’t want him to blame himself for a silly faint.
But it seems that the smile was of no avail at all. He sat up and put his hands on his face. I stood up ignoring the nurse who was asking me to lie down and bent down in front of him, resting my hands on his knees. He was scared to be worried about me and held my hands tight so I wouldn’t end up falling on the floor of the infirmary.
– Listen. You are not to blame for anything. It was my brain that gave me a very high dose of adrenaline and then took it out very fast. You have no way of guessing what will happen to my body. I went through much worse things and a toy will not stop me from enjoying the day of my birthday that my cousin prepared for me with such affection. – I said to him looking into his eyes.
He stood up and lifted me up with him. He hugged me so tightly and when he released me, he asked the nurse to check my pressure. When she said everything was fine with me, he took my hand and we left the infirmary. took us to eat something before we started playing again.
– What will you want ? – he asked me.
– A hamburger and orange juice. – I replied still looking at the menu of the cafeteria.
He smiled and called the waiter.
– Two hamburgers and two orange juices please. – he said
– Anything else sir ? – asked the waiter.
– For now no thank you. – Tobias replied.
– Wait for a brief moment sir\, I’ll be right back with your snack. – the waiter said and left.
Tobias watched me for several minutes until I asked:
– Why are you looking at me like that?
– It’s to see if you won’t pass out again. – he replied.
– You can’t prevent fainting. – I said.
– I know\, but if you pass out again\, I will have to run a long way again to the infirmary with you in my arms. – he said smiling.
When he said that, I felt my whole face turning red. I wanted to hide. Did he carry me? How embarrassed I was. But he didn’t see it that way.
– Hey\, are you okay? Your face is all red. – He said reaching out to touch me. Maybe he thought he had a fever.
I just nodded to let him know that I was okay without saying anything. I didn’t know what to say after knowing that.
I didn’t realize it yet, but we were close to the park’s Ferris Wheel. It was huge and had lots of lights on it, but as it was daytime, they were still off.
– Why don’t we go to the Ferris Wheel after we eat? – I asked him.
– Because I only intend to take you there when nightfall\, so you can see how beautiful it looks with all the lights on.- he answered me.
Soon after, the waiter came back with our snacks.
– Enjoy. – said the waiter after placing our snacks on the table.
When he was about to leave, Tobias called him.
– Yes ? – the waiter asked.
– Could you bring two servings of fries please? – Tobias asked.
– Yes sir. I’ll be back in a few minutes. – Said the waiter and left again.
Hamburger with orange juice and fries was our favorite snack when we were kids. I felt a little emotional when I heard that he still remembered our childhood and I let a tear slip.
– Why are you crying ? – he told me passing me a handkerchief.
– Thanks. – I thanked him before telling him the reason. – I was very happy for everything you did for me to have a great birthday and for you to still remember what we liked to eat when we were little. – I said.
He took my hands and said:
– You cannot imagine the extent of my happiness when I saw you pass by the door of my house when you returned and not even knowing that I can make you happy. – he told me as he ran his fingers over my face to dry a tear that I had let go.
At that moment, the waiter came back with our fries.
– Enjoy. – the waiter said with a smile on his face and left.
We ate quietly watching people walking from side to side heading for the park’s toys.
