I spent the entire trip with the strange feeling of being watched and looking at every detail of the roads to make sure it was just the fruit of my imagination. I was really bothering myself with it. totally put my intuition aside. But as I was alone with Tobias and we were traveling together, I decided not to focus on that at that moment.
We arrived at the beach house that our family had acquired a few years ago at around 15:00 pm. The trip had been very long. I got out of the car and looked around. Remembering the good memories I had of that house. We used to spend the holidays together here. My parents, me, my cousins, my uncle and my aunt. At that time I was happy. I would never have imagined that we had a traitor among us wishing all that was my father’s.
I didn’t care about the money or the luxury and wealth that my family had. My parents taught me to be humble and because of that, we lived a simple life despite our financial situation can provide us with a high standard of living in the eyes. I could very well live a dignified life, working like an ordinary person. But I wanted back everything that my uncle had taken from me and I was willing to do anything to make it possible.
– Diana\, you can get in first. I’m going to get my bags out of the car and I’ll get in soon. – Tobias said getting down and closing the car door.
– No\, I’ll help you. – I said following him towards the trunk of the car.
He smiled when he saw me following him. I waited for him to open the trunk looking at every move he made, but my attention was diverted because of a noise I heard in the middle of the trees that existed around the house.
– What happened ? – Tobias asked me looking in the same direction as me.
– I heard a noise in the trees. – I answered.
– It must have been the wind. – he said.
Maybe I was getting paranoid, but nothing got out of my head that someone was watching me. I put that feeling aside once more and went to help Tobias into the house with my bags.
Our beach house was made of jacaranda wood, the doors were made of fully transparent glass so that we could observe the beauty of nature at night. The small but cozy living and dining room had white furniture so that there was a contrast between the wood on the walls and floors were dark with light furniture. In the center of the room’s ceiling, there was a crystal chandelier. The kitchen and bathroom were further into the house. The bedrooms were on the first floor and each one had There were a total of five rooms, all of which are suites and two of which are doubles.
– I haven’t been here in years. – Tobias told me.
– Why didn’t you come over? Surely your father came here at least once during those years that I was away. – I said right after.
– I refused to come here. I missed your parents and you. Coming here would only increase my sadness even more. – he replied while looking outside the house.
The surrounding area only had vegetation. Trees and some exotic plants to further decorate the environment.
I walked to the kitchen and went out the back door, Tobias followed me outside. As soon as I opened the door, I saw that the pool was completely clean. And I hadn’t noticed, but the house smelled of roses.
– Tobias\, did you have the house cleaned? – I asked.
– Yes. – he replied smiling.
– I’ve been with you all this time and I don’t remember you sending someone to come and clean the house. – I said a little confused.
– Do you remember that about four days ago I gave Rose a break? – he asked me.
– Yes it is ? – I asked raising one of my eyebrows.
– It was on that day that she came here to clean everything. – he said laughing.
I laughed right away. At the same moment I started walking by the edge of the pool and looking at the sky and the trees that surrounded the house. If I didn’t know this place well, I could say that it compared to a desert island. calm, it had an aroma of nature and it was very cozy. But I realized that even in such a beautiful and pleasant place, I had a sad expression in my eyes.
Suddenly I felt Tobias wrap his arms around my whole body and I ran my hands over his arms. He was hot and smelled of lavender. I liked that fragrance.
– I’m sorry if this trip reminds you of your parents. I just wanted to see you happy. – he said with his head resting on my head.
I hadn’t realized that was the reason for my hidden sadness. It was so obvious to him, but so unknown to me. No matter where I went, I would always remember them and miss them.
– Tobias\, I’m really happy that you brought me here. You have no reason to apologize to me. – I told him trying to put the happiest smile on my lips as I turned to look him in the eyes.
He smiled at me back and hugged me even tighter and we stayed there for a brief moment.
– Come on\, I will go up the bags to put them in our rooms and I will go down to prepare something to eat. – said Tobias.
– Can you cook ? – I said sounding more surprised than I wanted.
– Yes. Is there a problem with that? – He said looking at me with his head raised as if he were proud of it and almost laughing.
– None. I’m just wondering so I don’t worry about the food\, since I never learned to cook. – I replied laughing.
We went back home laughing at the situation and went up the stairs that led to the corridor of the rooms. He first put my suitcase in my room.
– Take the time you need to organize your things and then go down. No need to rush. – he told me.
– Okay. But I will promise that I won’t leave you alone for long. – he said while putting a wide smile on my mouth and because of that\, I closed my eyes.
When I opened them back, Tobias was laughing and pointing at my face. So I crossed my arms and pouted.
– That’s good. It’s not funny. – he said while pouting.
– Yes\, you would understand if I saw your face just now. – he said while laughing.
So I closed the door to my room and pretended that I was really upset about that situation.
– Diana\, open the door. – said Tobias in the hall.
– Not now. I will come down and teach you not to laugh at people anymore. – I answered.
– It’s ok. – He said still laughing.
I heard his steps and the sound of the wheels on his suitcase as he walked towards his room.
I threw myself on my bed and was amazed at how everything that was mine was in place. Coloring books, pictures, dolls and history books were still there. Three walls in my room were white and one was pink. My closet was small, but it was enough to store the clothes I had brought. And my bathroom was all white.
As soon as I finished organizing my clothes in the closet, I decided to take a shower. Upon entering the bathroom, I wanted to see what I was really like in front of my mirror. I removed the contact lenses from my eyes and let the ice that ran through my veins to allow my hands to turn blue.
I looked at every detail of my appearance and saw that I didn’t have the appearance of a monster. Everything fit perfectly with the characteristics of my body and I thought it was beautiful.
– Will I ever be able to assume what I really am? – I whispered softly to myself.
I ran my hands through my hair to tie it up and went to shower. When I finished, I put the contact lenses back on and went to choose an outfit while I was dressed in the robe. I took a very colorful print dress and braided my hair. This braid was unlike any I had ever done. I parted my hair in the middle and started the braid at my shoulder and finished it at my hip, securing it with a transparent elastic. It was perfect.
I opened the door to my room and went downstairs to go to the kitchen to see what Tobias was doing. There was a smell of meat being roasted over the coals that was catching my attention from there.
When he saw me, he shook his head from side to side.
– Damn it ! – he said when he saw me.
– What’s it ? – I asked curiously.
– I didn’t want you to see what I was doing. It was a surprise. – he replied a little disappointed.
– If you had gone to ask me how long I would take\, I would not have come down before you finished all this. – I said with a mocking face and laughing at him.
– If you don’t take that mocking face right now\, you won’t eat from my barbecue. – he said pointing to me.
– Face of debauchery successfully removed. – I answered.
He burst out laughing at my answer and called me outside. We spent the night admiring the stars of the night sky while enjoying the wonderful barbecue he had prepared for both of us.
