I didn’t go down to dinner that night. I didn’t want to see anyone’s face and I didn’t want anyone to see me in that state either. I had cried for so long that I ended up falling asleep right there, on the cold floor of my room.
I woke up with sunlight hitting my eyes. I hadn’t closed the window curtain the night before.
I got up and when I did that, I realized that my whole body was sore. That had been one of the worst nights of my life up to that moment. When I looked in the mirror and seeing my reflection there, I was startled by what I saw.
Eyes red and swollen from crying with dark circles under my eyes.
– I look awful. – I whispered to myself.
I took out my cell phone and saw that it was still just 5:30 am. I was so sad that I didn’t care how early it was.
I took a deep breath and went to the bathroom to prepare a very hot bath in the bathtub where I took a long time.
When I finished, I went to choose my clothes while I was still wrapped in the towel. I took a champagne colored dress that was loose from my waist to just above my knees, I did the same braid as always in my hair and prepared a makeup very basic just to hide the disaster that was in my eyes and I left my room.
As I walked down the corridor, I looked towards the door of Tobias’s room, which was almost completely open and saw that he wasn’t there. I went down the stairs very slowly thinking that he was already eating his breakfast, but when I got down there, I gave up. account that he was not there.
I went towards the kitchen and Rose was already up. She worked so hard. I pitied her for not having more people to help her in that huge mansion.
– Good morning Rose. – I said when entering the kitchen.
– Good morning miss. I’m sorry for the delay. Your breakfast will be ready in a minute. – she said as she went back and forth picking up things to prepare my breakfast.
– Rose\, you don’t need to be in a hurry. It’s still too early. Take your time. – I said while trying to put a smile on my face. I confess it was very difficult.
– Thank you\, Miss. – She said while nodding positively and giving me a smile.
I just nodded my head back and walked towards the living room. I sat on one of the sofas and stared outside the front of the house. And I realized that Tobias’s car was not parked where he always left it. He hadn’t slept at home or left very early.
I wasn’t happy with the fact that he left during the night, but I didn’t have that right. Even loving him I rejected him and he didn’t even know the reason. Maybe he hated me from then on. I think the best decision I could to take was to go back to my house. I had stayed in that place too long.
As I lost myself in my thoughts, I was startled to hear Rose’s voice.
– Your breakfast is served miss.
– Thank you Rose. – I said as I got up and went to sit at the dining room table.
I wasn’t that hungry, but I needed to eat something since I hadn’t had dinner last night. I just ate some toast with curd and drank some pineapple juice and left the table.
– Rose. – I called her as I entered the kitchen.
– Yes. – she said\, startled as she sipped a cup of coffee.
– I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. – I said to her.
– No problem\, miss. – she replied with a smile on her face.
– Rose\, I’m going to take a tour of the city. If anyone asks for me\, just say so. – I said.
– Okay\, miss. – She said while nodding her head.
– Thank you Rose. – I thanked.
– You’re welcome\, miss. – I heard her saying as I left the kitchen.
I hurried up the stairs and brushed my teeth. I grabbed my bag, put my papers, some money and my cell phone and went down the stairs.
When I opened the front door of the house, I came face to face with Tobias who was arriving.
When he saw me, his face was all red and I felt that my face also had the same reaction.
– We can talk ? – he asked.
– Of course yes. – I answered.
I didn’t want to talk to Tobias about what happened last night, but I couldn’t help it at all. The best thing to do was talk about it as soon as possible.
He continued outside the house and held out his hand for me to pass. I got out and walked towards the gate.
I didn’t want anyone else to overhear our conversation.
– I think this is good enough. We are far enough away to have total privacy. Can I ask you something? – said Tobias. He looked impatient.
His eyes were in the same state as mine were.
– Yes you can. – I replied trying to sound as calm as possible. My heart was about to jump out of my chest so nervous that I was coming face to face with him.
– Diana\, how do you feel about me? – he asked me.
– Tobias\, I …
– Please answer me in all your sincerity. – he said interrupting me.
I took a deep breath and started to speak.
– Tobias\, I love you.
– What kind of love is that ? – he asked me.
– The same love you feel for me. Or at least that’s what I think you feel for me. – I answered.
– Of course I love you\, silly. But I can’t understand why you left me and said that to me. – he said shortly after.
– Tobias\, I’m only sixteen and you’re already eighteen. I don’t know what a teenager like me can offer to a man like you. – I answered.
That was not my real reason for rejecting him, much less I cared about the age difference or the fact that we were cousins. But I had to fix everything before I decided to start something with Tobias.
He took a deep breath, looked into my eyes so penetrating that it looked like he could see my soul and started to speak almost like a whisper.
– Is that why you said that while crying after I left your room?
– What ? – I asked in amazement.
– “I’m sorry Tobias. I can’t. At least not now.” – he replied.
I looked at him and started to get even more nervous. “How had he heard what I said?” Did I speak too loudly in that desperate moment? “Those were my thoughts at that time.
I realized that he was waiting for my answer. I had no escape, so I took a deep breath once more and let the words just come out of my mouth.
– I really love you and I want to have something with you\, but how can we have something?
– Diana\, you said “At least not now”. Why? – he asked me with an expression of fear.
Either he was afraid of my answer or he was suspicious of me again. I decided not to ask a question about my second thought and started to speak again.
– I can’t. I’m too young.
– I do not care about that. – he said as he approached me.
– But I care. – I replied while taking a step back.
– Okay. Then I’ll wait for you until you’re completely ready to have something with me. – he said firmly.
– And if by any chance\, one of us wants nothing more to do with each other. – I asked.
– For my part\, it will never happen Diana. – He answered me.
So I walked towards him and hugged him, burying my face in his chest and he wrapped my arms around my body, hugging me so tight that it looked like he would never let go.
– Thanks for your patience. – I said.
– It’s the least I could do to have you with me. – He replied and I felt his lips touch my head.
We spent a lot of time enjoying that hug until I decided to let him go.
– I have to go.- I said.
– Where are you going ? – he asked me.
– I’m going for a walk around town. – I answered.
– I’ll go with you. – he said.
– No. I want to go alone. – I said back.
– Are you sure ? – he asked.
– Yes\, I do. See you later. – I said as I hugged him again.
– See you. – he replied as I passed the exit gate.
