When I fell asleep, I had another nightmare. It seemed like it was becoming routine for me to have nightmares at least once a month. This time it was with the memory of my parents’ death scene, but there was something different. my body was also stretched out on the floor, lifeless beside my parents’ bodies. And I couldn’t wake up at all in one of those strange dreams.
When I finally woke up, it was thanks to the sound of Tobias knocking repeatedly on my bedroom door. I was still a little stunned with sleep and disoriented because of the dream when I got up and went towards the door. As soon as I opened it , Tobias practically threw himself into my arms and hugged me so tightly, it was very difficult to breathe at that moment.
– I can’t breathe Tobias. – I talked.
– I’m sorry. It’s been a long time since I knocked on your bedroom door and I started to worry about you not answering me. – he replied while his strength used in the embrace decreased\, but he didn’t let go.
– I lay down in an attempt to fall asleep and forget the horrible scene we saw earlier\, but I ended up trying a nightmare. – I said burying my face even more in his chest.
– What did you dream about? – he asked me right after.
So I started telling him every detail of my dream. And as soon as I finished talking, he hugged me again and said:
– Don’t worry\, that was just a dream. A bad dream. As long as I’m here\, I will never allow anything bad to happen to you. I promise.
– Thank you for being so nice to me. – I replied without asking him to loosen his embrace.
We continued hugs there at the entrance to my room for a long time until he remembered that he still hadn’t told me why he came to my room.
– I came to call you to go to the funeral of my father’s doctor. Rose has already prepared everything.
– I’ll get ready very quickly and I’ll find you down there. – I said.
He just nodded, kissed my forehead and left my room. Then, I went straight to the bathroom to take a shower and start preparing for the funeral.
I had reached my goal, which was to reach my uncle. But having involved a person who was not part of his family and had nothing to do with the things my uncle had done, made me feel guilty. and sadness. I was not at all happy with what I had done.
I turned on the shower and took a shower very quickly. When I finished, I went to choose my outfit. A black long-sleeved blouse and black pants. I left my hair really loose, put a pair of black sneakers on my feet, just grabbed the my cell phone and left my room so I could go down and meet Tobias.
When I arrived in the hall, I heard voices coming from downstairs and it looked like someone was arguing. I went downstairs and before I could get downstairs, I saw it was Tobias and my uncle arguing.
– Dad\, it’s no use trying to argue. Nothing will make me let you out of the house with your poor health. – I heard Tobias talking as soon as I took the bottom step of the stairs.
– Listen here. The son here is you and I rule myself. You will not stop me from leaving the house and attending the funeral of my best friend. Do you understand? replied my uncle.
– Uncle and Tobias\, calm down. If you keep arguing\, there won’t be a place. – I said walking towards the two.
– And what do you suggest dear? – asked my uncle. I hated it when he called me that.
– First\, that you stop exalting yourself. You can not keep talking too much. Your health is weak as Tobias said.
– Saw ? I told you. – Tobias said interrupting me.
– May I continue ? – I asked looking at him raising one of my eyebrows.
– Of course. – he replied with a smile.
– Second … Tobias\, your father hasn’t left home for months. He’ll spend a few hours at his friend’s funeral\, it won’t do any harm.
– Saw ? I told you. – said my uncle with a tone of irony looking at Tobias.
Tobias took a deep breath and said:
– Okay. But as soon as the burial is over\, you will come straight home. Nothing to say more than necessary and I will find another doctor for you.
– OK no problem. – replied my uncle.
– Great. Can we go? – asked Tobias.
– Yes let’s go. – I answered.
We helped my uncle to his feet and accompanied him from one side of him to the car. Tobias drove to the cemetery where the burial would take place and I was surprised to see that it was the same one where my parents were buried. heart at that moment.
Although it was Rose who arranged everything, my uncle had taken care of choosing the flowers, the coffin and even the place where he would be buried.
The gravediggers took us to my uncle’s family grave and I didn’t understand why.
– He didn’t have a family? – I asked.
– He was an orphan when he was little and managed to have a decent life as soon as he left the orphanage. replied my uncle.
– And how did you meet? – I asked.
– The orphanage where he lived\, was on the street of my mother’s house. The nuns allowed the older children to play on the street. It was one of those outings that we met. – he replied and I noticed that there were tears forming in his eyes.
The whole story only made me feel worse and worse when I remembered that I had involved an innocent man in my revenge. Because the name had to be written on the grave, only on that day do you know what the doctor’s name was: Stefan Royal.
We put the flowers on top of the doctor’s grave and left the cemetery to go home. I wanted to visit my parents, but I wasn’t feeling worthy to perform in front of them after my act of cruelty.
We made our way back in silence and as soon as we got home, I locked myself in my room and started to cry.
Because of the feeling of guilt that was ravaging me inside, I did nothing for six years.
