The Hongs have been envious of the Angenas family even before the empire was established. They always felt rivaled even before the Angenas was chosen to rule the small kingdom of Katapangan because the former king Alberto Katapangan’s children from all his concubines died due to an unknown illness. The only two possible candidates to the throne were his loyal subordinates and friends, Sion Angenas and Marky Hong. Marky was a distant relative of Alberto but Sion was more of a leader and a ruler. Before Alberto’s death, he declared that the heir would be Sion. Thus, the Angenases reluctantly took over the kingdom.
Marky didn’t show any signs of disgust as he accepted the decision. But their descendants began to create issues, chaos, and eventually division within the family. One side wanted to fight for the right to the throne, the other side remained to stand by the late king’s decision as they saw it fit.
Before it became an empire, Katapangan is a small kingdom within the central region which is reigned by the Angenases. Due to the oppression from neighboring countries, King Angenas commanded his three generals to conquer neighboring countries and kingdoms. He led them to battle and to victory. The kingdom expanded slowly until it became the largest empire within the Maharlika continent.
Katapangan Empire is composed of three large regions which are distributed to three pillars of the empire. The Hong clan was recognized in the central region. The Fernando clan was recognized in the East region. The Mariposa clan was recognized in the west region. Years passed and the emperor slowly became vicious and easily angered due to small matters. He could hurt whoever he thought as traitor. He sent so many rebels to prison. He allowed those rebels who volunteered to toil farmlands to work and let them have new lives.
The empire continued to have peace and order for a century until such time that small groups are organizing rebellions. They kidnap civilians and brainwash children in every countryside they go. They imbued a negative image of Emperor Enrico Angenas to the people, thus causing innocent and ignorant people to join the rebel organizations until such time that the emperor could only resort to military command and let the three dukes lead the army in each region.
King Angenas let his generals execute whomever they caught to rebel. He allowed every possible punishments raised in the court. Unfortunately, the Hongs have organized a coup for almost two decades before the coronation of Emperor Enrico. And their chance of overthrowing the emperor grew due to the numerous supporters they gathered from the countryside.
Vicente Do is sick and tired of the Hong family division. They have so many leaders. They use each member as if they were only chess pieces, pawns to be exact. They would rather place a puppet king on the throne rather than take it themselves as they did to his grandaunt Marie Hong and to his uncle.
Although Vicente has the vision and ability to be the next king, he wasn’t nominated to be the next king. His uncle’s dethronement caused him to forcibly take the power from the family by openly killing the heads from each family branch who contradicts his wishes. Now, he is a ‘king’ within the family.
The capital is located in the central region. When Jericho Angenas took over the throne, he took a careful consideration of the Hongs. With their long running family history, surely, no one disagreed when he restored the dukedom to the Hongs. As a matter of chance to prove their love for the empire, Jericho Angenas, the current emperor bestowed the title of a duke to Vicente Do as he is the most promising among the Hongs. The previous emperor and his daughter fled the country. By exile or not, they would have done the same thing in order not to get involved in the imperial conflict.
“Three pillars of the empire, huh! What nonsense!” Vicente struck the table which startled everyone present. “Send our men to take the former princess…” he grinned as he thought. “It’s the princess consort rather,” he said and they gasped with wide eyes, looking at each other. The room was filled with indistinct whispers.
“We’ve been betrayed!” a count stood up to raise his concern.
“Or did you plan this, your grace?” another count calmly asked.
“A Hong cannot possibly yoke with an Angenas. It’s incomprehensible,” a baron spoke, shaking his head.
“Everyone must calm down. We’ll capture an Angenas red-handedly killing innocent lives. We shall see how he is going to kill everyone with his own sword in his own hand. A perfect witness is going to see the cruelty of an Angenas. Maybe her clouded mind would be cleared after this,” he said talking about Alexandra.
He knew Alexandra would be easily swayed. He knew that she is righteous and she is a girl who doesn’t judge only by seeing one side. He hates that justice-seeking side of his cousin. Because of that, he couldn’t get her to his side. He even invited the other two dukes to meet him in Arana bridge, just above the river where the ‘hostage-takers’ and the third prince would meet up. Even those pillars are no longer easily manipulated by the so-called unity talks, which obviously favors the throne but secretly tries to overthrow any ruler who is no longer useful and manageable by the Hongs.
So, he can only stage a slaughter. Hostage-takers would dress up as imperial soldiers and show to the people that the imperial army is abusing their power, the third prince and commander at that.
