Chapter 2232 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 20

Stay updated through empire

The Demon Rats might have been injured by the armoured spirit defenders but they were still able to move through the battlefield with ease. It was their first time fighting against phantom armoured dudes and only through luck that their weapons were able to not just take a hit but also attack them back.

They had forgotten that their weapons had been tempered by the System's science research department which was capable of cutting almost anything as long as there was some mana flowing through their weapons.

And even though the genes of these Demon Rats had not been modified to take in mana, their mobility suits had that function installed in them like a dynamo engine, allowing them to perform mana focused hits if there was sufficient magic energy stored in those suits.

That is to say that the armoured spirit defenders could be considered lucky if they struck one of the Demon Rats that did not have any mana left instilled into his suit. As for the others, they were able to slip away and continue through the battlefield so that they could discover more tricks the humans were hiding.

Especially since they were the vanguard, there was no need to worry about their back since those monsters behind were dying to get some action in as well. In fact, they were happy that there were substitutes for them to kill instead of going for the main course straight away. But more importantly, such an attempt on their lives had already been recorded since they had scoured through most of the Southern Kingdom Alliance before reaching to Ends.

Those armoured spirit defenders had been previously used by a few kingdom defenders albeit at a smaller scale and less aggressively. Yet, those encounters was more than enough to update the System and prepare its attackers to meet such a problem when it pops out. In short, the elites of the various Southern Kingdoms needed to put up something unique that their fellow dead kingdom defenders had shown.

Thankfully, it looks like there were more coming up because they are the elites.

The Demon Rats were reaching close to the first wave of barricades and one of the human leaders already gave the order to intercept the vanguard of the Demon Horde before they come any closer. Immediately a swarm of rats, cats and dogs emerged from the side of the barricades, running towards them frantically.

It was forbidden magic and the Southern Kingdom Mages know it very well. They knew that when it comes to psychic manipulation of living beings, it was a taboo. Yet, this was very taboo was the very essence of these elite mages that the Southern Kingdom Alliance were expert in. It was as if they were given free passes just because they were the most elite of combatants when it comes to fighting for the kingdom.

These swarms of rats, stray cats and wild dogs were moving at incredible speed, ignoring the breakage of muscles or bones. Even if they were shot with an arrow that inflicted severe pain to them had been ignored because of the mind manipulation. Their one and only goal was to rush towards the Demons and bite them.

Because that was the command given to them and that was the trigger for the runes which was inscribed on the stray animals. Most of these runes were offensive in nature, mainly the use of corpse explosion spells despite the fact that they were still living beings. This was because the runes had been modified such that it instantly forced all the being's lifeforce into the the corpse explosion rune, causing the dog, cat or rat to die on the spot the moment it managed to grab a bite on the enemy.

After which, that life force becomes the trigger once the corpse explosion reached trigger point. And even if the bite didn't happen, meaning that the living being had been killed before hand, it would still trigger the corpse explosion mainly because they were killed. This was undoubtedly a surprise for the Demon Rat Vanguards as they never could have thought that the mages were playing dirty with such sly tricks.

However, all was fair in love and war since the Demon Horde had an overwhelming presence against the humans. They needed every opportunity they could get to make sure that things would go their way. That was the same for the Vanguard of the Demon Horde as well. Even as most of the Demon Rats had to engaged against the massive swarm of rats and wild strays, a few managed to use their mobility gear to get a grip onto the fortress, bypassing most of the barricades that were in front of them.

But the moment the very first Demon Rat was within the grasp of the city's walls, the walls suddenly came alive and grabbed the rat with its stony tentacles. It instantly pulled the Demon Rat into the wall as if it was sucking it alive, and it sure was. The Demon Rat's life force had been drained until there was not a drip left in it, its heart would stop moving. In return, the wall seemed to have gained extra powers from it as if it was living and breathing.

That was when the Orc Leaders took a closer look and even asked the mages to identify its root source. They eventually confirmed that the capital walls were alive. The Demon Mages concurred that the mages had once again used forbidden spells to cause the city walls to be sentient in nature so it might be able to heal either through the sacrifice of the humans or their enemies.

Therefore, this can be a rather long battle of attrition if the Demon Horde wished to drag the fight and ensure that no survivors were allowed to survive from this siege. After all, getting the King's head was not enough for Jin who had renewed his orders and told them to slaughter them all until they desperately requested for Ress's help.

In the end, it was just a show with the victims being the Southern Kingdom Alliance and they had no idea this was all orchestrated by Ress for the sake of conquering their lands so that he can build large sized automated factories for the upcoming Mecha Universe.
