After ending the call, Sabrina placed her phone on the table, sank back into the sofa, and shut her eyes, her thoughts in turmoil.
Sabrina asked herself whether she had feelings for Tyrone. Even though he wasn't the beacon of light in her darkness anymore, her affection for him lingered.
Then, the image of Jennie crossed her mind.
Sabrina assumed although Jennie wasn't hers, she had to admit Jennie was full of life and charm, always well-behaved, insightful, and intelligent. Having spent so much time together, Sabrina had come to love Jennie as if Jennie were her own.
Even now, if Jennie were to appear before her, Sabrina knew she couldn't bring herself to loathe Jennie.
Then, another question popped up. Had Tyrone done something wrong? After all, he was drugged back then and unaware of Jennie's existence and her background until recently.
Was Jennie at fault? Jennie was the least to blame. She didn't get to choose her parents. She had held the belief that she was an orphan and was understandably sensitive.
Yet, Sabrina found it impossible to act as if nothing had changed and return to her previous life. She was torn, reluctant, and uneasy.
Right then, her phone buzzed again.
Taking a deep breath, Sabrina opened her eyes and checked the caller ID. It was Tyrone.
She declined the call without a second thought.
Seconds later, her phone rang once more.
Sabrina picked up the phone without glancing at the caller ID and snapped, "I already told you I need some space. Stop calling me!"
"Hey, Sabrina. It's me!"
Sabrina heard a weary female voice on the other end.
Caught off guard, Sabrina pulled the phone away and glanced at the caller ID. It was Galilea.
Sabrina was puzzled. Her dad's case had been reopened, with Hobson and Zeke providing new evidence. Galilea was arrested two weeks ago. How was Galilea calling now?
Seeing no response from Sabrina, the woman on the phone tried again. "Sabrina?"
Even though Galilea's voice sounded a bit different, Sabrina could tell it was definitely Galilea.
"What do you want?" Sabrina asked, her tone icy.
"Aren't you curious about what really happened to your dad?" Galilea's eerie voice floated through the phone.
Sabrina hesitated a bit and asked with caution, "What really happened to my dad? Weren't you and Larry responsible for his death?"
"Hahaha..." Galilea just laughed as if she just heard a joke. "Why are you laughing?"
"I'm laughing at you. You're being so silly. Back then, I was just a college student. How could I possibly kill anyone? How could I have connected with Zeke? How could I have convinced them to work for me?"
Sabrina held her breath, her heart pounding faster with each word. "You mean to say..."
"All I wanted was to meet your father and falsely accuse him of raping me. That way, his reputation would be ruined. But then, someone approached me, offering their help. It was only later that I realized I was being used..."
"Who... Who used you?"
"If you're really curious, meet me at the police station. Face to face. I'll share everything I know with the police." Galilea saw this as her chance to strike a deal with Sabrina, hoping to reduce her sentence.
Sabrina, intrigued by the possibility of uncovering a deeper conspiracy, was willing to consider Galilea's terms. "Alright, I'm on my way."
Sabrina jumped to her feet, slipped on her shoes, grabbed her car keys, and dashed out the door.
But luck wasn't on her side. Sabrina hit a red light at the very first intersection.
Anxiously waiting for it to change, her day got even worse when suddenly her car was rear-ended.
Dazed for a moment, Sabrina turned to see the damage through the rear windshield... Damn it! What a bad luck!
