Chapter 943
Maxine meticulously compiled and went through everything on the way back to the city.
She only intended to voice her concerns, not to cause a rift between James and Thomas.
James‘ heart was already turbulent and hearing Maxine’s speculations only served to stir those feelings of unease more strongly.
“I believe in my grandpa just like you believe in Tobias. Let’s end this conversation here. I’ll think about it after we return.”
Even though he still had his doubts, he chose to continue believing in his grandfather.
Thea stared daggers at Maxine and said haughtily, “Are you done now? You can leave if you’ve said enough. We’re going to do
what couples do now. Don’t tell me you’d like to be part of the audience?”
Maxine pressed her lips together, refrained from saying anything more, and got up to leave.
After she left, Thea immediately clung to James. “Honey, you don’t believe what she said, right?”
James gently shook his head. It was an extremely hard pill to swallow.
He trusted his grandfather more than Maxine.
... Yet, Maxine did raise valid concerns. There were many unexplainable things surrounding recent events.
“Let’s not discuss it further. It’s getting late. You should head back to your room and rest. I’m waiting for the Centurian to arrive so
I can borrow some equipment.”
“What if... I said no?”
Thea wrapped her hands around James‘ waist and burrowed her face into his chest. She looked up at him, saying coquettishly,
“I’m not leaving. You promised that we’d watch fireworks together. Honey, when all this blows over, let’s find a nice and quiet
village, and settle down there. You’ll plow the land, and I’ll cook our meals. I want us to live a simple and peaceful life. What do
you say?”
James slowly pried himself out of her embrace and stepped back gently.
In the past, he would have jumped at the offer, but things were different now. This was merely wishful thinking that would
probably remain unfulfilled.
There was no guarantee he would survive the coming battles.
Thea took out a black token and placed it in James‘ palm.
James looked back at her. “What is this?”
Thea said, “It’s called God–King token. The God–King Palace only recognizes people who possess their tokens. Having this
token will mean that you’re the owner of God–King Palace. The Four Great Protectors, Ten Elders, Thirty–Seven Stars, and
Seventy–Two Demons will all be at your beck and call.
‘What the hell are the Thirty–Seven Stars and Seventy–Two Demons?‘James was baffled.
“They are powerhouses of the God–King Palace, The Four Great Protectors are grandmasters who’ve reached the pinnacle of
the fourth rank and are close to reaching the fifth rank. The Ten Elders are of the third rank. The Thirty–Seven Stars are of the
second rank, and the Seventy–Two Demons are in the first rank.”
She briefly went over the God–King Palace’s forces.
“Your grandfather secretly founded the God–King Palace as a way to take revenge on the Cadens and the people that framed
him thirty years ago. He felt guilty for not being able to protect and keep his family safe. Fortunately, you survived. Sir Caden had
been hoping to keep you safe. You’re God–King Palace’s rightful owner now that the God–King token is yours.”
James never expected the God–King Palace to be so strong.
They had grandmasters that were in the fourth rank, soon to reach the fifth rank.
There were also ten people at the third rank.
These were all incredibly formidable people. If he had them as allies, he would surely survive the conflict between the Four
Ancient Families and the ensuing political battle.
“By the way...”
James suddenly recalled something and asked, “Did Grandpa ever tell you the ultimate secret of the four paintings?”
He suspected his grandfather would have an idea about the secret of the four other paintings if he already knew of the Moonlit
Flowers on Cliffside’s Edge’s secret.
Thea shook her head and said, “Grandpa didn’t say anything.”
“Alright.”
James accepted the God–King token. “Thank you for secretly providing me with so much. help.”
“Sir Caden is the one who has been helping you.” Thea corrected him.
“Mhm.” James nodded.
He leaned back onto the sofa, lost in his thoughts.
Thea did not leave his room.
She was not proficient in using her True Energy yet and stayed behind to practice in James room.
Two hours passed in a blink of an eye.
Outside the hotel, a green off–road vehicle pulled up.
A man with thick eyebrows stepped out of the car in his black overcoat. He was followed by two other tall men.
