Chapter 1326
“Evelyn, you always seemed so savvy and straightforward, how could you stoop
to this?” the voice of a woman from the community center’s card room cut
through the air, her finger jabbing accusingly in Evelyn's direction.
“I can’t believe it. I used to invite you for a card games whenever I had spare
time, and now this? Seducing a married man? Have you no shame?”
Even a usually friendly old lady, who often played bridge with Evelyn, was
shaking her head in disapproval.
“And don't you dare sit at my card table again. I fear your touch might taint my
cards,” a stern-faced elder spat out, her index finger wagging in the air as she
scolded Evelyn.
These were the same people who used to share gossip and camaraderie with
her over a friendly game. Yet now, these so-called friends were looking down on
her with disdain, their scornful gazes and a sea of harsh words threatening to
drown her.
Evelyn's breath quivered, and her trembling hands caused the smartphone to
clatter to the ground.
She staggered back, overwhelmed with humiliation and shaking with indignation,
tears streaming down her face as she shouted, “Enough! You don’t know
anything, so how can you judge me this way when you know nothing about the
backdrop? You're the useless ones! All you do every day is play cards, lose
money, and gossip around. What else are you good for?”
Her voice was near hysterical, her pain and rage swirling like a blizzard within
her.
She pointed shakily at those who had verbally attacked her.
When times were good, they were warm and generous to her. But let one
scandal arise. and not a single one of them would try to see things from her
perspective, as if she were their sworn enemy all the way.
Now Evelyn saw the cruel truth: her so-called friends were nothing but a pack of
treacherous, heartless gossipmongers!
“We might not do much, but at least we don't go around seducing other women’s
husbands. Shame on you for trying to shift the blame,” retorted one of the card
players with a sneer
Evelyn's tense breathing deflated as if punctured, her pain immense as tears
flooded her eyes, and the last shreds of hope in her heart crumbled
“Fine, I'm shameless! You're the virtuous ones, and you have your dignity!”
Evelyn tossed the woman's phone to the ground and stumbled away, her body
rocking as if drained of all strength.
She moved like a lost soul, her energy seemingly sapped.
Evelyn had always cherished her reputation above all else.
But in just a moment, in front of a group of self-righteous peers, her lifetime of
pride had
vanished into thin air.
She felt as exposed as if she'd been stripped bare and paraded down Main
Street, the feelings of humiliation and suffocation unbearable.
The card room members followed her out, pointing and laughing at her
staggering figure. as she made her way onto the road, their cruel words cutting
through the air.
Evelyn walked on, her face streaked with tears, her eyes hollow. Cars swerved to
avoid her numb form as she crossed the street. She was oblivious to the danger.
Thankfully, the drivers reacted in time, swerving and honking to avoid a disaster.
