Chapter 1329
Thalassa’s legs were limp as she sprinted through the hospital corridors,
searching frantically for a doctor. When she finally spotted one, she blurted out,
“Excuse me! Have you seen a lady brought in in emergency? Her name’s Evelyn
Pendleton.”
“Are you her family?” the doctor inquired.
“I'm her daughter.” Thalassa replied, a tremor in her voice.
At the mention of her relation, the doctor's eyes dropped, his expression somber.
“I'm sorry to tell you this, but the patient was pronounced dead at the scene. She
was brought here for... postmortem care. You can find her in the morgue.”
“What!” Thalassa’s whole body shook violently, the last thread of hope within her
snapping.
It felt like a thunderclap had gone off in her head, leaving her so unsteady she
could hardly stand.
“Thalassa...” Lysander caught her as she nearly collapsed, noting her ashen face
and quivering lips. His heart also twisted painfully.
He had sensed trouble but never imagined Evelyn had died in a car crash.
“Let me help you to the morgue,” Lysander said, his voice rough with emotion as
he supported Thalassa’s trembling frame.
Without his aid, she might have crumpled to the ground.
Biting her lip, Thalassa followed Lysander toward the morgue in despair, each
movement feeling like a descent into hell.
Upon arriving, they encountered the mortician, who was preparing Evelyn's body.
Thalassa saw her mother lying on the cold, hard slab, her face under the harsh
light, marred by blood not fully cleaned, the left side of her skull caved in from the
car crash.
Had the doctor not informed her beforehand, Thalassa would have never
recognized her own mother.
Evelyn was beyond recognition, a sight too gruesome to bear.
The moment Thalassa laid eyes on her, the last vestige of strength she had been
clinging to evaporated, and grief engulfed her like a tidal wave.
“Mom!” she cried out in agony, her heart quivering, breath short.
She reached out, wanting to touch her mother, but the sight of Evelyn's disfigured
face made her hesitate, fearing even the slightest touch might cause her pain.
“Mom...” Thalassa sobbed, her body going limp with sorrow and shock.
Lysander enveloped her with his broad chest, providing the support she
desperately needed, his hands steadying her shoulders to keep her upright.
“Mom, why? Why did this happen? Weren't we supposed to stick together?
Why...”
