The next day, Charlie and Claire packed their bags and checked out of the Providence hotel where they had been staying for
over a month.
They drove straight to the New York airport, where Charlie received a call from Elaine as they were checking out.
“Good son-in-law, where are you?” Elaine asked.
“Mom, are you in the VIP building?” Charlie asked.
“Yes,” Elaine replied.
“The hospital director personally sent me here.”
“Good,” Charlie said, “Wait for us in the lobby of the VIP building.
We’ll be right there.”
After hanging up the phone, Charlie finished the process of returning the car and turned to Claire, spoke, “Let’s go directly to the
VIP building.
Mom has already arrived.”
Claire didn’t realize that her mother had suffered another broken leg.
Despite this, she couldn’t resist teasing her, saying, “My mom sure knows how to create drama.
She told us she missed us and wanted to see us, but then she left after only a few days...”
“When she left, she was duped and ended up in prison.
Eventually, she was released, but instead of coming to find us, she chose to live alone in New York and try to make a new life for
herself.'”
Charlie laughed and said, “Mom is just like that, you still don’t understand? I called her yesterday to ask her to come with us, but
she still doesn’t want to go.”
Claire shook her head helplessly and sighed, “There’s nothing I can do about her.”
Since the car rental agency was located some distance away from the VIP building, the employees of the agency drove a small
ferry to bring Charlie and Claire to the entrance of the VIP building.
Just as they entered the VIP building, they heard Elaine shout out their names.
Claire looked around, but she couldn’t see Elaine.
As Claire looked down, she was shocked to see that there was a person driving up in an electric wheelchair and it was her
mother, Elaine.
Elaine stopped the wheelchair in front of Claire and Charlie and said to Claire, “Where are you looking? You can’t even see your
mother with such big eyes.”
Claire, feeling embarrassed, replied, “Mom, I didn’t look down...”
Upon seeing her mother, Claire was initially happy to see that Elaine seemed to be doing well.
As she looked rosy and healthy, even having put on a little weight since Claire had last seen her.
However, Claire’s joy was short-lived as she remembered her mother was in a wheelchair.
She asked Elaine worriedly, “Mom, why are you in a wheelchair again?”
Elaine sighed and explained, “Don’t mention it.
A few days ago, I had an unlucky slip and fell, breaking my leg again.”
Claire exclaimed in distress, “Mom... Why can’t you be more careful... You’ve broken this leg so many times... If this keeps up,
will it be able to heal properly?”
Elaine chuckled and replied, “Yes, yes, yes.
The doctor said I can definitely recover this leg, so you can rest assured that it will be fine.”
Claire replied seriously, “Mom, you may not feel it now, but I’m afraid there will be consequences in your old age.
You have to be more careful in the future and try not to injure this leg again...”
Elaine nodded gravely and said, “Okay, okay.
I’ll make sure to take good care of this leg in the future.”
Claire could only nod helplessly in response.
