Above all, however, there was one problem Rita had to go through first- confronting her father's interrogation.
That evening, as she entered her family home and changed her shoes in the hallway, she noticed Donna shaking her head subtly at her.
"Your father isn't in a good mood," Donna remarked quietly.
Rita nodded. She knew that Donna cared about her and always had a knack for preemptively gauging the atmosphere. "Okay. Is there anything special for dinner tonight?" Rita attempted to lighten the mood with a smile.
"When have I ever failed to cook your favorite dish when you're here? If only you'd come back more frequently so my cooking skills wouldn't go to waste," Donna replied warmly.
Their hushed conversation unexpectedly caught the attention of someone else.
"You have some nerve asking if she cooked something special for you? Don't you find that embarrassing?" Sadie's voice resonated from upstairs. She stood haughtily with her arms folded and glared at Rita disdainfully.
Rita ignored Sadie and continued to talk to Donna. "I'll bring you over to my place when things go well for me at my job. Then you can cook for me every day," she quipped.
Donna nodded. "That sounds wonderful. I'll be more than happy to take care of you for the rest of your life."
"Are you deaf? Can't you hear me? If I were in your position, I'd never set foot in the Russell household again," Sadie retorted sharply, refusing to det Rita off the hook so easily. "If I were as filthy as you are, I wouldn't even show up in this villa and be an eyesore. And you always say that Dad doesn't treat you well," Sadie continued.
Rita did not respond to Sadie; her father's opinion was the only one that mattered to her. Aside from Donna's, of course. Everyone else's opinion did not matter to her.
On the other hand, Donna could not bring herself to remain silent at Sadie's harsh words. "Miss Sadie, those are merely rumors. How can you take them at face value? In my opinion, you should focus more on your studies rather than on this sort of idle gossip."
Infuriated by Donna's intervention, Sadie lashed out, "Who do you think you are? You're just a servant. How dare you use that tone with me!"
Donna bowed and recognized the truth in Sadie's words. Though she was angry, she understood the dynamics of the household. Sadie and Karen did not treat the servants with care and consideration, unlike Rita's mother Taya who viewed everyone as part of one family.
To Karen and Sadie, there was a hierarchy, and servants were treated as nothing more than people whose job was to serve them. Worse still servants were often subjected to disparaging remarks by the two of them, and they seemed to target those who like Donna, who had been there since Taya's time.

Becoming the savior and trying to charm others. Anyone can do that,"
Sadie mocked. "It's a shame that
things had to end on those who
to end on a bad note for those who have been here since your mother was alive. Anyway, you'd
better have your script ready for Dad. You've been defiled, so I'm pretty sure no one would want to marry you. I can't imagine the sort of headache my mother will have to go through." Visit Popsnovel.com to read the latest chapter of this novel
