*Trigger Warning*
This Chapter Contains Graphic Descriptions of Self-Harm
Liam grabbed the butterfly knife from her hand and pulled Caroline closer to him. He placed his hand behind her head, forcing her into a kiss. Through the passionate kiss, he passed over four pills.
He stopped kissing her when she finally swallowed the pills. “What the hell was that?” Caroline exclaimed. Liam ignored her and with the butterfly knife he held in his hand, he cut one of the cable ties that tied Roxy to the chair.
He then closed the butterfly knife and placed it inside his pocket. Without letting go of Caroline the entire time, he waited for the pills to take effect. Because he has had trouble sleeping ever since Caroline left him, he became insomniac. He has been taking pills to help his sleepless nights.
As time progressed, the pills he had been taking started to take less effect. In order to be able to sleep again, he had to take a stronger dosage, which made the pills take effect faster. “What did you give me?” Caroline asked as her eyes began to force themselves shut and her head began to lean forward. She tried as hard as she could to fight the effect of the pills but ended up burying her face against Liam’s chest and drifting off to sleep.
Liam carried her in his arms and looked at the woman sitting on the chair, who was completely bewildered. “Thank- thank you for saving me,” Roxy spoke. “I didn’t do it for you. I did it for her.”
As he began to walk towards the exit he added, “you better hide if you want to live… I can’t tame her forever.” He continued walking until he made his way to Caroline’s car. He opened the door and sat her on the passenger’s seat.
He walked over to the driver’s and got in the car. He took out his cellphone from his pocket. He dialed his friend’s phone number and when the call finally went through, the man over the phone spoke, “hello? Liam?”
“What happens if I take more than one of those sleeping pills you gave me?”
“Why are you asking me this? What did you do?”
“I gave four pills to someone-.”
“What is wrong with you?” The man over the phone exclaimed, “I specifically told you not to take more than one pill a day. Do you have any idea how harmful that can be?” The man over the phone let out a sigh. “Where are you?”
“I’m on my way to my house.”
“I’ll meet you there.” Liam hung up the phone and looked over at the sleeping woman sitting beside him. He reached over and buckled her seatbelt before staring at her once more. He let out a sigh and softly spoke, “why did you have to go this far?”
Inside the warehouse, Roxy looked to the side and grabbed the dagger that was stuck on the chair. She pulled the dagger and with it, she cut the zip tie that kept her tied to the chair. She then looked at her ankles and hissed at the sight of the dried blood on her skin and on the cable tie.
She slowly cut the zip tie with the sharp blade. She pressed her fingers against the marks left by the plastic tie, dirtying her fingers with a bit of blood. She looked around the large room before slowly standing up from the chair. She staggered on her way to the door.
When she walked out of the warehouse, she looked around, but she found no one in sight. She aimlessly walked towards the water. She walked through the large containers as she tightly held onto the dagger in her hand and tears streamed down her face.
When she finally reached the end of the port, she looked at the dark water in front of her before looking at the bright night above her. She placed her fingers against her neck and ran them along her neck.
She stopped and inspected her fingers. She found blood on the tip of her fingers from the cut Caroline had made on her neck when Liam tried to stop her. She then stared at the beautiful full moon and let out a chuckle. “So, this is it… I’m sorry, Sebastian. I never meant for this to happen. I hope to see you soon and apologize to you.”
Roxy held out her arm before rolling up her sleeve. She stared at her forearm, paying close attention to the veins running up her arm. Her fingers curled up into a fist as she continued to watch her veins.
She tightly held the dagger in her other hand and placed it above her wrist. She pressed the tip of the dagger against her flesh before sinking the blade against her skin. She slowly carved through her skin, watching the blood gush out of her body.
She continued cutting through her flesh, trying to feel pain with a smile on her face as blood oozed out of the cut. “Why doesn’t it hurt?” She spoke as she carved even deeper. She retrieved the dagger from her body and watched the blood from her forearm drip onto the water in front of her. She let out a laugh, but despite her laughter, tears still ran down her face. She stopped laughing and took a step forward, falling down to the vast, cold, sea.
In Liam’s mansion, Liam was pacing back and forth, waiting for his friend to walk out of his bedroom. He finished the last sip of scotch from the glass in his hand, trying to calm himself. He walked over to the door of the bedroom and was about to open the door when the doctor walked out of the bedroom.
“How is she?” Liam asked in distraught. “I gave her an IV; she should be fine for now,” David responded. “When will she wake up?”
“I can’t say for sure. You’re lucky I followed you down here. You wouldn’t like to imagine what would have happened if I would have stayed in New York.” Liam looked down at the floor and David added, “I will not ask you how this happened, but you need to understand how lucky you were. It seems her body was already exposed to the pill, which is why she is not in a critical position right now. I did take some blood to run some tests to make sure she is safe.”
Liam let out a sigh of relief as he looked over at Caroline, who was sleeping on his bed. He looked back at David who was about to make his way down the stairs. He stopped in his tracks and looked back at Liam and spoke, “before I leave, give me the pills.”
“What?”
“I should have never given them to you in the first place. They are not in the market for a reason, so give me the pills.” Liam slowly reached into the pocket of his suit jacket and took out the small bottle of pills. David snatched the bottle from his hand and said, “I don’t even know why you carry these around with you.”
Liam stayed quiet. David turned around once again and continued walking. He made his way down the stairs and walked out of the mansion. Liam looked at the woman sleeping on the bed and walked closer to her. He sat on the side of the bed and gently laid his finger against her cheek, caressing her smooth complexion. He leaned closer to her face and pressed a sweet peck on her forehead.
Liam stayed by her side for some time, praying that she would wake up soon. Seeing how she was in deep sleep, he leaned in again. He pressed another peck against her forehead and whispered, “please, wake up soon.”
A few days later, Caroline slowly opened her eyes. She looked around and focused on the window. She watched the night sky through the window before looking around the bedroom once more.
She found Liam lazily sitting on an armchair in the corner of the room. She stared at him, wondering what happened. She looked down at her hand and found the IV needle attached to her hand.
With her other hand, she was about to take out the needle, but she was suddenly stopped by Liam’s tight embrace. “You’re okay,” He whispered as he tightened his grip around her. “Liam? What is going on?”
“I’m sorry, Caroline. It was the only way I could stop you.” Caroline placed her hands on his strong chest and pushed him away. “You drugged me,” she exclaimed. “I had no choice. You were getting out of control.”
“Out of control?”
“Caroline, you almost killed your cousin.” Caroline looked down as she remembered what happened. “Why did you tell me to go there? Did you want an audience? Or did you want me to stop you?”
Caroline stayed quiet for a few seconds before answering, “I don’t know.” She let out a sigh and looked him in the eye. Her eyes watered and she added, “I don’t know why I told you to go there… Maybe part of me wanted you to stop me… Maybe part of me needed you to be the one to bring me back to my senses.”
Liam reached out his hand and gently laid it against her cheek. He slowly wiped away the tears streaming down her face. “What happened with Roxy?”
“I don’t know,” Liam responded, “I’m sure she ran away.” He leaned closer to her and whispered, “I think it’s best if you just let her be.” He pressed a peck against her forehead before leaning back with a reassuring smile on his face.
“You’re not mad at me? Are you not going to scold me or something?” He let out a light chuckle and shook his head. “No, I’m not. I am sure you are already reproaching yourself; you don’t need my commentary to add to how miserable you must feel right now.”
And he was right. If it were not because of Liam, Caroline would have killed Roxy and then regretted her actions. She would have spent the rest of her life thinking she let Sebastian down.
Caroline slowly leaned in, placing her forehead against his shoulder. “I never wanted things to go that far… I don’t know what came over me… I should find her and-.” Liam placed his hand overhead and slowly pat her head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Caroline. I think it’s better if you stay away from her.”
Caroline suddenly burst into tears, making Liam embrace her in his arms. “I’m a monster. Sebastian wouldn’t have wanted this.”
“Caroline, you are not a monster. You are a human and humans make mistakes. Yes, you shouldn’t have gone that far, but I understand why you would go to such lengths.” Liam pressed a peck against her head, trying to calm her down.
When she finally calmed down, Liam left the bedroom to make a phone call. He dialed his doctor’s phone number and notified him that Caroline had awakened from her sleep.
After the doctor arrived, he kicked Liam out of the bedroom and closed the door. He stepped closer to Caroline as he said, “Ms. King, how do you feel?” Caroline let out a sigh. “How long was I asleep for?”
“About seventy-two hours.” David stood beside her and removed the IV needle that was attached to the back of her hand. “Ms. King, have you ever had trouble sleeping before? Have you resulted into taking sleeping aids like the pills Liam gave you?”
Caroline nodded. “I have, but just recently.”
“I see.” David reached into the pocket of his gown and took out the bottle of pills he had taken back from Liam. “Have you had the opportunity of taking these pills?” He handed over the bottle to Caroline.
She looked at the bottle before opening it. She took out a pill and examined it. “You see, there is something peculiar about these pills. They are not on the market because they can be quite dangerous.”
Caroline raised her eyebrow before he proceeded. “These pills also have a unique shape.”
“If you are trying to ask me if I have taken these before, I have.”
“I see. Mind if I ask you where you got them from?”
“I don’t know,” Caroline responded, “I can’t remember.”
“Is there a way you could try to remember?”
“Why are you asking me so many questions, doctor?”
“Ms. King, you see, I developed these pills for Liam-.” Caroline cut him off and said, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I do not feel the need to be interrogated. I have things to do, so if you would excuse me.”
