- Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 You Dug Your Own Grave
A couple of days after the incident, the bright sunny days turned gray. Caroline stood in front of Sebastian’s casket, her hands curled into fists and her nails sinking into her skin. Liam, who stood beside her, grabbed her hand, making her look at him while relaxing her hands. “Stop blaming yourself. It was not your fault,” Liam whispered.
A tear escaped her eye as she looked back at the lifeless man in front of her. Caroline slipped her hand from Liam’s grip, letting another tear leave her swollen eyes. She turned around and walked out of the room as Liam watched her leave. He looked back at the man inside the casket and vowed to keep his promise.
Caroline walked out of the crematorium, trying to breathe some fresh air. She looked up at the glum sky and took a deep breath. She then looked around and caught a glance of a woman hiding behind the trees. She fetched her cellphone from her handbag and made a phone call. Making sure the woman did not run away again, Caroline finished her phone call and walked back inside the building.
Her tears had dried and she neared her family and friends, who were grieving Sebastian’s passing. After hearing the news of Sebastian’s passing, they all flew back to Miami. Although Caroline had her family and friends to rely on, she had been neglecting everyone except for her children for the past few days.
Caroline stood next to Persephone and Persephone pulled her in for a hug. Caroline tightly hugged her as she closed her eyes, fighting to hold back her tears. Despite wanting to keep her emotions locked inside, she could not stop her sadness from taking over.
Caroline slowly separated from the hug and Persephone slowly wiped away her tears. Caroline looked at Charles and he asked, “any news from her?” Caroline shook her head. Caroline looked back down and before long; the silence was broken by a man trying to get into the crematorium.
Caroline walked over to the entrance and found Sebastian’s family trying to walk inside. Caroline looked at Sebastian’s father before glancing at Sebastian’s half-siblings. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to see my son, of course.”
“You are not welcome here,” Caroline responded, “I will kindly ask you to leave.”
“Ms. King, you cannot stop me from seeing my son. I am his father.” Caroline shook her head. “You are not his father. You are nothing but the man who traumatized and mistreated him. You do not deserve to be here. Now leave before I kick you out.”
“Caroline-.” She looked at her bodyguards who were preventing the man from entering and said, “take him away.” As the bodyguards were carrying out their order, Caroline spoke, “don’t call me Caroline. You and I are not friends, Mr. Scott.”
After watching the man being dragged away, Caroline walked back to the room where Sebastian was kept. She walked up to him and spoke, “this is not a goodbye…” She stepped out of the room and walked closer to her mother. Then, Elizabeth embraced her in a hug.
When Caroline arrived back at the mansion, the butler opened the door for her. Caroline stepped inside the mansion as Elizabeth walked in behind her. The butler walked over to them and Caroline him the urn she held in her arms. “Carefully place this in my study.” The butler nodded and walked to Caroline’s study.
After the incident happened, Caroline thought it was best to move back to the mansion. Elizabeth and Caroline set their differences aside and Caroline moved back to the mansion. Caroline then made her way up the stairs and walked to her bedroom. She placed her designer handbag on the bed and went inside the bathroom. She undressed and went into the shower.
After she finished showering, she got dressed and made her way down to the twins’ playroom. She walked inside the spacious room and found the twins playing with the new nanny she hired. Caroline smiled after seeing the twins. Because the crematorium was not the place to take the twins, she decided to leave them at home.
While the twins were busy playing with their toys, Caroline slowly stepped closer to them. As she neared the two little kids playing on the floor, she crouched down, placing her hands over their shoulders while exclaiming, “boo!”
The twins jumped at the same time and then turned around to look at her. “Mommy, why did you do that?” Mia asked. Caroline laughed and placed her hand over her cheek. She caressed the little girl’s cheek and responded, “I just wanted to surprise you.” Then, Caroline smiled and pulled the twins in for a hug.
When Caroline stopped hugging the twins, she stood up while they did the same. The nanny also stood up from the floor and bowed her head. “Good evening, Ms. King,” she spoke. “Good evening,” Caroline responded. The woman walked out of the playroom, leaving Caroline and the twins alone.
“Mommy, are you okay? You look sad,” Ian spoke. Caroline faked a smile, remembering she needed to stay strong in front of her children. “Yes, I am fine, Ian.” Caroline looked at the time portrayed on her phone screen and added, “it is time for dinner. Let’s go.”
After having dinner with her family, Caroline got the twins ready to go to bed. She dressed them in their matching pajamas and tucked them in their beds. She sat in the giant teddy bear in the middle of the beds and read the story of La Caperucita Roja.
When the twins finally fell asleep, she pressed a peck on their foreheads before placing the book back on the bookshelf and walked out of the bedroom. Caroline walked to her bedroom and went inside her walk-in closet. She changed her clothes and went to the entrance of the mansion.
Caroline walked over to the Bugatti her chauffeur had just parked in front of her. She got in the supercar and drove away. As she drove to the location, she sent Liam a text message, attaching the location of the warehouse in the port, which she had recently bought.
When Caroline arrived at the port, she parked near the warehouse and got off the car after opening the trunk at the front of the car. She grabbed the obsidian weekend bag from the frunk and closed it.
Caroline walked over to the warehouse and stepped inside after being greeted by the bodyguards at the door. They opened the door for her and she casually walked inside with a smile on her face.
A woman was sitting in the middle of the warehouse. Her ankles were tied together with cable ties, tied so tightly the plastic was carving into her skin. Her wrists were tied by her sides on the armless chair.
Caroline let out a giggle as the click-clacking sound of her black high heels echoed in the large room, dimly illuminated room. “Caroline?” The woman let out with a whine. Caroline stepped closer to the woman after placing her bag on the table near the woman.
“How’s it going, Rox?” Roxy slowly lifted her gaze to meet Caroline’s while squinting her eyes, trying to avoid the light shining above her. “Caroline, why are you doing this?” Caroline smirked and walked over to the table.
She opened the zipper on the black bag. She took out a revolver from inside the bag. She looked back at the woman strapped to the chair and uttered, “you like gambles, right Roxy? Because I love gambles… So, why don’t we play a fun game.”
Caroline looked at the chamber of the revolver and took out two bullets. She let the other four bullets fall to the floor. She placed the two bullets back inside the chamber and closed it. She stepped closer to Roxy and crouched down, meeting her gaze.
Caroline placed the muzzle of the gun under Roxy’s chin and spoke, “I’m sure you know exactly why you are in this position.”
“No. Please. Caroline. I didn’t mean-.” Caroline turned the gun, pointing the muzzle up, beneath her chin. Roxy’s voice cracked as she spoke. Her tears streamed down her face. “There is no need to cry, Roxy. Did you really think I would let you go after kidnapping my child? You not only traumatized a three-year-old, but you also killed my best friend.”
Caroline laughed hysterically as she retrieved the gun to run her hand through her hair while the hand with the revolver rested above her head. “You killed the only person that kept me sane. You killed the only person that pulled me from my darkness while your father tortured me.”
“Caroline, I never meant for this to happen.”
“You dug your own grave.” Caroline pinched Roxy’s jaw with her fingers, making her meet her gaze. Roxy looked into Caroline’s eyes, looking for a bit of sympathy, but instead, she found a new side of Caroline, while the Caroline she knew was completely gone.
Roxy flinched from the scare whilst Caroline smirked. “I was going to go nice on you but now you’ve made me angry.” Caroline let go of Roxy and stood up. She walked over to the table and placed the revolver on the table.
As Caroline fetched another item from her bag, Liam hurried inside the warehouse. Caroline looked up and stared at the man who had just entered the room. “Well, look who finally decided to join us.”
Liam looked around the room as he slowly walked closer to Caroline. “Doesn’t this bring back memories? She was sitting in that same chair the day she kidnapped Mia.”
“Caroline, what is going on?” Caroline ignored Liam’s question and grabbed a dagger from the bag. She inspected the dagger in her hand and took off the case. “Caroline! Stop this!” Caroline instantly turned to look at him.
“Liam, I can’t stop this. She kidnapped Mia. She killed my best friend. She killed your friend.” Liam stared at the woman in front of him, looking for the woman he knew and loved. “Caroline, this isn’t like you. Please, put down the dagger.”
Caroline swung her arm forward, placing the dagger inches away from Liam’s face. He raised his arms and Caroline chuckled. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe this isn’t like me-.”
“Stop this madness then. Caroline, what she did was wrong, but she is your cousin. She is your family-.”
“She is no family.”
“Caroline, please.” She slowly began to lower her guard, making Roxy giggle. “You’ve always been very obedient towards men, huh Caroline?” She turned around to look at the woman smiling despite the position she was in.
Caroline’s anger surged. Liam grabbed her wrist, but Caroline had already aimed and thrown the dagger at Roxy. As soon as she threw the dagger, Caroline turned to face him. She pulled back her wrist while glaring at him.
After the intense stare, Caroline looked back at Roxy. When she threw the dagger, Roxy ducked whilst moving her face to the side. Fortunately, the sharp blade did not cause any major injuries.
Caroline stepped closer to Roxy and inspected her face. She pinched her jaw once again and turned her head to the side, inspecting the cut on her cheek made by the dagger. As she continued to inspect the bleeding cut, she followed the cut and noticed the sharp blade hit Roxy’s cheek and followed through, hitting the tip of her ear and stopping at the back of the wooden chair.
Caroline pressed her finger against Roxy’s cut. She looked at the red drop of blood on her finger and smirked. She licked her finger, removing the blood from her finger. Caroline looked at Liam. “That’s enough,” he said as he walked closer to her. Caroline walked around Roxy and stood behind her.
She looked at Liam dead in the eye and said, “she kidnapped Mia and killed Sebastian. There is no way I will let that go.”
“Yes, you can.” Caroline rolled her eyes. “Caroline,” Roxy spoke, “you have no right to say you loved him. If you really loved him, you wouldn’t be doing this.” Caroline ran her fingers through Roxy’s hair and pulled her hair from her hairline, making her look up at her.
Caroline placed her hand over her garter and grabbed the butterfly knife that rested on the garter. She opened the knife and looked down at Roxy. They stared into each other’s eyes. While Caroline smiled, Roxy trembled in fear. She placed the butterfly knife’s blade against Roxy’s neck. Right when she was about to slit Roxy’s throat, Liam bragged Caroline’s wrist and forced her hand open.
