To Matt, starting off in the morning with a cup of coffee was never a bad thing. Everyday, he would sit at the table and have breakfast while chatting happily with whoever was awake at the same time as him. And sometimes, he would be startled upon hearing the sound of the bedroom door being slammed open, followed by the panicking voice of one of his friends who was apparently late for something. In short, his dorm was never really quiet in the morning, though he didn’t really mind it. He enjoyed the atmosphere of a typical college life.
However, today was different. Everything around him was peaceful and he could hear the birds chirping outside. Under the sunlight that was coming in through the windows, the brunet sitting next to him on the bed seemed to glow even more brightly than ever, his blue eyes the color of the sky outside. Even his smile was shining more magnificently than the sunlight itself. Matt sipped on his coffee in an attempt to distract himself from the man’s beauty, though his effort was in vain.
“Thank you for this, professor…”
Matt said shyly as he stared down at his coffee mug. But when he received no reply, he quickly got a strange feeling. His professor was never one to stay quiet and stop the flow of a conversation like that, especially not after a thank you. Looking up, he saw his professor staring at him as if he was expecting something else. After wondering what the other man could possibly want from him, he carefully thought about what he had just said and figured it out right away.
“Oh, I, I mean, R-Ray…”
“I’ll call you Matt if you call me Ray”, that was what his boyfriend had told him yesterday, the day their hearts became one.
“I’m glad you remember.” Ray’s smile returned and he patted Matt’s head. Matt couldn’t hold in his smile as butterflies fluttered in his stomach. Calling this handsome man by his first name was such a simple thing, yet it brought such a magical feeling, making him tingle all over. It was probably because he had always used his formal title ever since the first day they met in class. And similar to that, today was the first day he heard his nickname coming from his professor after such a long time. Ray called him Matt when he just stepped into the room a while ago, but at that time, Matt was too deep in the pit of hopelessness that he didn’t have a chance to cherish the moment. Thinking back about it made him a little embarrassed.
“I’m sorry, Ray…” he mumbled. “This is the very first morning we’re offically a couple, and yet I greeted you by saying that our relationship can’t exist.”
Ray gave him a gaze of sympathy before leaning in for a hug, putting his mug onto the nightstand beforehand. Matt’s heart skipped a beat at the bodily contact. It was a hug that showed how unafraid his boyfriend was when giving his partner affection.
“I completely understand that feeling, Matt. I was the same.” Ray smiled. “This morning, I thought I would just wake up alone like usual, but then I saw a beautiful person sleeping soundly next to me.”
Matt’s heart raced as his face reddened, his hands gripping his mug tightly as an attempt to control himself.
“How you fill in that empty spot on my bed is just like how you fill in the hole in my heart. At first, I was in disbelief as well. I thought that you were just a figment of my imagination. But upon feeling your hair and hearing every small breath you let out, I knew you were real.” Ray stroked Matt’s hair as he continued, his voice quiet and sentimental. “I… I can’t believe it, Matt. You’re finally mine…”
After the emotional moment had come to an end, they just stayed like that, Matt silent as Ray’s embrace filled him with warmth. In those minutes, Matt realized how alike they were.
They were both lovestruck from the first second they saw each other at that coffee shop. They both tried to be as close to each other as possible. They had experienced jealousy. They had had doubts about their own and the other’s feelings. They had gone through pain and the thought of not being accepted. And lastly, they had shared the feeling of denial. The journey was indeed long but their effort was all worth it, because here they were, alone together in Ray’s bedroom. Matt let out a small sigh, taking in the fragrant scent of his partner’s cologne.
“We’re so similar, aren’t we?” Matt chuckled. “From the way we fell for each other to how we think our feelings are hopeless.”
“Indeed. It’s quite humorous in a sense,” Ray said as he pulled away, causing Matt to secretly get upset over the suddenly loss of warmth. “But now, I don’t need to worry about it anymore, because you’re here, wearing my shirt.”
“Wearing your…” Matt didn’t have time to finish his sentence before a mortifying realization struck him like a lightning. He looked down to see that he was no longer in his hoodie, but rather a long-sleeved T-shirt which was not his own. And moreover, he didn’t bring any extra clothes yesterday.
After confirming that he was really wearing his boyfriend’s clothes, a dark red blush crept up his cheeks in the matter of seconds. He turned away, using his arm to hide his embarrassed face.
But on the topic of clothes, he couldn’t help sneaking a glance at how his boyfriend was dressed. He had seen Ray in informal outfits many times before, whenever he met up with Ray at his house as his TA. But now, he looked even more casual than ever. He was wearing a pair of 3/4 denim shorts and a black shirt with its sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The way the shirt’s top button was undone revealed a bit of his chest underneath, making Matt a bit curious. He wondered if his clothes failed his perfect figure.
“Come on, it’t nothing to be ashamed of. However…”
Ray’s voice suddenly changed, its tone turning from tender to darkly deep. He shortened the distance between them once more, his right hand on Matt’s side while his other touched his chin. He lifted his boyfriend’s face up as his blue eyes gazed into the other’s brown eyes, their face inches away.
“Seeing you in my shirt is quite irresistible.”
Matt shivered at the vibration of his boyfriend’s low voice, his heart beating uncontrollably as he breathed heavily. Before his head could process what was happening, Ray moved back and returned to his gentle self, talking as if he hadn’t just turned into a different person a while ago.
“But hey, don’t you think the rain yesterday was more than a coincidence?”
Hearing Ray’s words, Matt began to think back about it as well.
…__________…
“Oh my, it’s time already?”
Matt said after seeing that it was almost seven in the evening. His professor, who was now more than his professor, also looked up at his clock and realized how late it was. After their confessions, Ray insisted that Matt spend some time with him as his boyfriend. The way Ray had bashfully offered him to stay was so adorable that Matt couldn’t even think of declining. They talked about various things, not bothering to keep their distance and unafraid to shower each other with love. Too attracted to one another, they weren’t aware that they had been talking for more than an hour straight.
“Must you go now, Matt?” Ray looked up at Matt with sad eyes when he stood up from the couch.
“I don’t want to, but I have to,” Matt said with dissapointment hinted in his voice. “Today’s Tuesday and my shift ends at five thirty. My campus closes at ten, but my suitemates will get worried if I’m not at home two hours after my shift, unless I tell them beforehand.”
“Well…” Ray thought for a while. “How about you text them and say that you’re busy and have to stay overnight?”
“You know they won’t leave it at that, Ray.” Matt chuckled. “If you think about it, not a lot of students are comfortable enough to stay at their professor’s place. They’ll interrogate me for sure, unless I have a good excuse.”
Ray seemed like he wanted to say something but decided against it. “Alright, I’ll open the door for you, but promise me that you’ll come again soon.”
“I promise.”
Just after Matt had finished his sentence, a heavy rain came crashing in, sounding loudly as each drop hit the roof harshly like thousands of rocks. They looked out of the windows with a dumbfounded expression, both of them startled when the lightning flashed.
“Great.”
In this case, that word should have been said in sarcasm and annoyance, but Matt sensed none of it in Ray’s tone. Opposite to that, he even sounded happy about it.
“Now you have a good excuse. This doesn’t look like it’ll go away soon.”
Indeed, the rain lasted until two in the morning, when the new couple was snuggling in the blanket together, seeking each other’s heat.
…__________…
“Yeah, that rain came out of nowhere, to be honest.” Matt let out a little laugh. “If we hadn’t confessed yet, I would have panicked. Being stuck with your crush could be the best and worst thing ever.”
“I know.” Ray chuckled. “Anyway, do you have class this morning?”
“Fortunately, I don’t, but I still need to get back to my dorm,” Matt said. “My friends are probably very worried for me now.”
Indeed, what he said was one hundred percent correct.
“Matt! You’re home!” Chloe greeted him at the door. “Gosh, the rain last night was so scary that I got scared for you.”
“Yeah!” Ethan exclaimed. “I kept asking myself ‘What if he’s still on the streets?'”
“Alright, alright, calm down, everyone.” Matt sweated like a child being questioned by his overprotective parents after returning home late, which was the perfect representation of this situation.
“You stayed at Professor Angevine’s place, right?”
After calling the brunet Ray so many times, it was difficult hearing his formal title again. He gave Chloe a nod, which eliciting a gasp from Ethan.
“Damn.” Ethan held his fist in front of his mouth. “You really stayed at our professor’s house? Did some action happen?”
If Matt had been drinking water at that moment, he would have either choked on it or spat it out.
“Dude, are you out of your mind?” Matt stared at the taller guy in disbelief. “I’m not that horn— I mean desparate to the point that I’d sleep with my professor! And don’t you give me that smug face— Don’t—”
Well, technically, he did sleep with his professor, but in a literal and innocent way.
“Come on, no need for censorship.” Chloe chuckled after hearing Matt stopping himself from saying the h-word. “No one needs all those ‘family friendly content’ stuff here.”
“Ethan, didn’t I text you all that I was staying at our professor’s place? Why do you look so surprised?”
“I forgot, okay?” Ethan pretended to frown like a kid. “Give me a break!”
“Okay, to sum up, I did nothing with our professor other than work. End of discussion.”
Matt let out a small sigh as the two continued to tease him. However, he did not forget about the fouth person in the room, a certain dark-haired girl who hadn’t said anything the entire time. When he looked at her, he spotted that look on her face, which made his face as pale as a ghost.
It was the look of someone who wasn’t buying it.
