Arakata Hisashi’s POV
After being absent for a week, I came back to work feeling energized. I was happy to see how everyone at school missed me and welcomed me back.
“Arakata-sensei are you feeling better now?”
“We promise to behave well so you won’t be stressed anymore?”
“Sensei we brought this for you so please enjoy it.”
All of my students seems prepared upon my arrival during the homeroom meeting because they all gave me different presents for my recovery.
“Hey you don’t have to make it a big deal, it’s just a simple cold, I will not die because of it. But anyway, thank you for all your concerns.” I can’t help but smile to the students which I rarely do. I walked back to the office with an armful of goods I received.
“Hisashi-san, welcome back. You are really lucky to have your students idolize you so much.” Sakaguchi-san greeted me.
“Hahaha, well maybe all my luck went to this school year. By the way I am really sorry for not answering your mail the last time because my phone drowned.”
“It’s okay, but you really made us worried when your friend came here looking for you and that’s when everyone started to panick. You are also lucky to have such a caring friend.”
“Oh by the way, how’s your homeroom students behaving now? And about that ex-deliquent kid you mentioned, is he attending your class properly?”
“That kid… Well his attendance is perfect since the second day of classes but I can clearly see how he doesn’t really want to be friendly with anyone in the class.”
“Just tell me if you need help.”
We chatted for a while until it is my time to go to my next class. The classroom was chaotic compared to my homeroom students who were all behaved and obedient towards me. Now I understand why Sakaguchi-san looks more stressed everytime I see her.
“Everyone please settle down!” I shouted in front because they didn’t even noticed that I was already in front of them.
“Arakata-sensei good morning.” at least they managed to greet me properly when rhe class representative stood up and lead the whole class.
“I’m sorry for being away for a week but I hope you all study the lessons I have left to you during our first meeting so prepare for a short quiz now.”
“Ehhhh?!! What?!!” All the despair came flooding through their faces as they heard the word quiz.
I didn’t even have time to make a roll call for the students’ attendance.
It was not my intention to give them a surprise quiz but they pissed me off the moment I stepped in. I guess this will serve as a little revenge for making Sakaguchi-san’s work miserable.
After the quiz, I went back to the office feeling satisfied with a smug look on my face after seeing how terrified their reactions were. I hope that it will serve as a lesson for them to behave properly from now on.
When lunch break arrived, I decided to bring my bento and eat at the rooftop but when I checked the place, It was covered with water from the rain last night so I decided to search for a perfect spot down in the school campus.
As I am walking towards a bench under the cherry blossoms tree, I suddenly felt someone staring intently behind my back but when I turned around to look, nobody was there.Maybe it was just my imagination.
I take my seat at the bench and started eating my bento but I can feel someone is still staring at me and so I slowly looked around using the reflection of the cover of my shinny lunch box. As I scanned the area, I caught a glimpse of a student hiding behind a tree at my left corner.
I finished my lunch as fast as I can while still observing him from my makeshift mirror, waiting for him to make a move but he is just standing still while watching me.
Is this student want to say something to me? Why don’t he just approach me and talk to me? Or is he one of the trouble maker students who just want to beat me up?
I prepared myself in case an attack really happen and started walking towards his direction to confront him but when he saw that I am approaching his direction, he immediately run away and so I didn’t see his face clearly.
Hey! What’s wrong with that kid? Is he messing up with me?
I walked back to the office to get ready for my afternoon classes but I still can’t erase what happened there.
When the class hours is finally over, I decided to go home immediately to forget everything but on my way to the parking lot, I noticed someone is following me. I take glances from time to time and it appears that it is the same kid from earlier.
I ride in my car and waited for him to come out in the open but then, he run away again without even turning back.
Really… What the heck is wrong with that kid?
The following day, I only have one class and it is during the first period so I have the whole day vacant and so I decided to go to the library to read some of the new books delivered there for the new school year.
I was too preoccupied in reading that I didn’t even noticed that it was already 2 in the afternoon and I missed lunch break and unfortunately, I didn’t bring any bento for today.
I walked in the school cafeteria which is almost empty as I am still hoping to find something I can buy to eat.
I approached the lunch lady to ask for anything available but unfortunately everything was sold out and just advised me to go out and buy food from the convenience store.
After my failed attempt to search for food, and because I am too lazy to walk out to the convenience store outside the school, my only choice is the vending machine at the end of the hallway and have some canned coffee.
I made my way back to the office where it was almost empty because everyone have their own classes to attend to including Sakaguchi-san. I sit in my chair and drink my coffee while sulking how idiot I am to let myself starve like this.
I can still remember how I always do this during middle school but Nao was always there to give me the half portion of his bento.
If only I could turn back in time…..
….
“Arakata-sensei, Arakata-san, it is time to go home.” I opened my eyes and saw Sakaguchi-san shaking my shoulders lightly as she tried to wake me up.
“Oh I didn’t even noticed that I fell asleep, thanks for waking me up.”
“No, I should be the one thanking you. You know it feels so different how my students behaved today and when I asked the class representative secretly after my class, she told me that it was all your fault for traumatizing them and I can’t almost hide my laughter after hearing that. So it was your notorious spartan discipline again acting up.”
“Haha well that serves them right for being a problematic class for everyone. I should be going home now ,bye and see you tomorrow.” I carried my things and walked out until I reached the parking lot.
There are a lot of teachers and staffs that were also there to get in their car and go home so I feel at ease without worrying if the student that have been following me yesterday is still tailing me. I hop in my car, throw my things at the back seat and started the engine of the car when I noticed a red paper bag in front of car hood.
I slowly get out of the car and looked at it before slowly touching it. Fortunately, the owner of the car parked next to mine was still there who still finishing his cigarette and so I asked him. “Hey is this paper bag belongs to you?” I raised the bag to show it to him but he just shake his head.
“Then did you see someone who put it in front of my car?”
“Nope, I was the first person to arrive here when the class have ended but I didn’t notice anyone walking near our cars.”
“Oh is that so, thanks.” I walked away a little bit and nervously peaked at the content of the bag.
It is a box. I shake the bag lightly to check for something that is inside the box but there was no sound. In the end I decided to pull out the box and slowly opened it.
Ohh, it was a disposable lunch box. But who the hell will leave a bento in front of someone else’s car? And based on it’s smell it is almost spoiled due to being left in the parking lot for hours.
My spine felt chill when I remembered that I skipped lunch today. Is this that kid’s doing? Did he thought that the food will not spoil here, or he intentionally left a spoiled thing in front of my car just to ruin my day?
I was about to throw everything when a small piece of paper fall out of the bag. I picked it up and unfold it.
‘Sorry for all the trouble, hope you don’t skip your lunch next time.’
The handwriting was messy so I can tell at first glance that it came from a student and more specifically a male student.
I put the paper on my pocket and then threw the spoiled lunch away before driving back home.
What do you want from me? And who are you?
