Amelia had anxiety attacks during her journey from Italy to London with Skylar and Trevor. The man had been avoiding her since the time they boarded the flight and when asked for the reason, he only said that she would find out once they would reach London. For some reason, her heart was not at ease. Skylar and Trevor had been oddly silent through out the journey and it only made her feel restless.
By the time they reached London, Trevor’s driver waited for them at the airport. Amelia looked around to see where they were heading, she didn’t understand what was going on and her impatience was taking over her patience.
“Where are we going Trevor?” she asked Trevor, who was seated in the front seat. His eyes were closed as if he was sleeping but he was only trying to avoid Amelia’s curious gaze and the glares he was receiving from her.
“All I know is that Adrian wanted me to bring you here,” he answered with a sigh, his fingers brushed his eyebrows. Trevor didn’t understand why Adrian didn’t want him to tell her anything. He knew that Amelia was a curious woman just like him, it would’ve been better if she knew it but he made sure to zip his mouth in front of Amelia but he had to tell Skylar to bring her along with them.
“And you didn’t ask him why?” she posed another question. It was so unlike Trevor, the man who liked to irritate her with his strange twisted questions was silent.
Instead of responding to her answer, Trevor remained silent while Skylar was looking out through the window. She clutched her dress with her fingers. The driver was going too fast and the windows were closed, she felt suffocated. She took a deep breathe and opened the window to breathe fresh air but that didn’t help her because the driver was driving faster than it was necessary.
She closed her eyes to divert her mind and it was then Trevor opened his eyes to see the mirror which reflected Skylar. He gave a quick glance at her to see that she balled her fist to control herself.
“Drive slow,” Trevor spoke to the driver softly and then he looked back at the mirror until he saw Skylar loosen her balled fist.
When the car stopped, Amelia recognised it as a hospital. She didn’t bother to ask Trevor because her eyes found Adrian who was standing at the entrance of the hospital. Opening the door of the car, she rushed to hug him. Though it has been only three days since she saw him, she felt as if it has been an eternity. She didn’t know what it was, but her heart was feeling heavy even after meeting Adrian. The way Trevor and Skylar behaved made her feel that something was wrong and when she saw Adrian, it only worsened.
“What happened?” she asked him, expectantly. But before he could answer, she saw a familiar person.
“Mrs. Santiago?” Amelia saw her maid a little away from where she stood with Adrian. It took her a few seconds to analyze the situation. As she walked to toward the woman, she found her father’s body guards.
“Whe.. Where is he. Is he fine?” she asked the old woman with a heavy heart. “Please.. tell me.. he is fine,” her words broke into pieces as she spoke to her. When she saw the woman, all she could think was only about her father. Her mind went blank and she couldn’t think properly.
“He is still unconsious,” Mrs. Santiago spoke to her as they rushed to Roman’s room. Amelia looked at her father who was on the bed in an unconscious state. Tears formed in her eyes when she saw him. Never did she think that she would have to meet him again this way. Her father was a healthy man and to see him unconscious, broke her heart into pieces. The guilt that had always been in her heart became heavy. Like a fog that blurs the view, everything around her blurred in seconds when her eyes were filled with tears.
“What happened to him?” she was standing at the closed door and saw her father through the glassed door. A bile was formed in her throat while she tried to control herself. Memories of her mother flashed on the back of her mind and it only made her feel weaker than she already was after seeing her father.
“Mr. Earnshaw had a heart attack,” answered Mrs. Santiago. Amelia didn’t respond, she only looked at her father silently and felt someone press her shoulder. She titled her head to see Skylar who came to stand by her side. It was then her unshed tears trickled down to her cheeks. She hugged Skylar and cried to her heart content and Skylar consoled her until she calmed down.
Mrs. Santiago left the hospital when Amelia asked her to take rest since the old woman had been in the hospital since morning. She assured the old woman that she would be fine since Skylar, Trevor and Adrian were with her. She had few glances at Adrian once in a while but couldn’t speak to him.
“Mr. Stephen!” Amelia greeted weakly when she saw a familiar man. The man was her father’s secretary. She speaks to him more than she speaks to her father since he was the one who drops her the messages of her father.
“What did the doctors say?” she enquired. Her eyes were red and swollen. Her throat pained when she spoke to him.
“The doctors said he is now out of danger for now…” Stephen cleared his throat and swallowed the remaining words. Amelia glared at him for not telling her everything. She could see the nervousness that showed on his face.
“I need to know everything Mr. Stephen,” she demanded for an answer.
“That…young lady, this is the second time Mr. Earnshaw had a heart attack. He had been smoking alot after you have left home. By the time he found you, he went into depression and blamed himself for not taking care of you when you were here. Though he didn’t tell me I could… I could see it. I know that I am not in a place to speak to you in this way but I think you need to stay back in London for his sake at least, young lady. The man cares for you though his ways are a bit… odd,” the man named Stephen who was in his mid fifties, almost his father’s age, spoke to her.
She had no idea that her father had heart attack before. No one had informed about it and to see that she just came to know about it she blamed herself more.
“When did he have heart attack before?” she asked him. She balled her fist and controlled her emotions, she tried to stay strong in front of the man.
“It was the time of your birthday,” the man responded. “Mr. Earnshaw didn’t want you to know that he fell sick,” the man explained.
A huge part of Amelia blamed her for taking such hasty decision. She thought her father was always strict and never took care of her or loved her. She always thought her father hated her and never believed when Mrs. Santiago told her that he cared for her but after listening to Stephen, she asked herself if she judged her father wrong all this time.
She prayed for her father’s health and waited for him to become normal, she wanted to apologise him and speak to him. Even if he would hate and scold her again, she was ready to face him. She just wanted to see her father normal again.
Morning arrived but Amelia stayed in the same place. Skylar sat beside her in silence and looked after her. It was around seven in the morning when Trevor came to Skylar. Amelia didn’t listen to what Trevor spoke to her friend, Skylar agreed to him and decided to leave with him.
After Skylar left, Amelia was left alone and she was findling with her fingers when she felt Adrian’s hand take hold of her soft ones. They were alone in the corridor and a nurse was looking after her father in the room. Adrian took a seat beside Amelia. She looked at his hand in hers and then rested her head on his shoulder.
“You knew about me!” it was not a question but a statement
“I did,” he answered, barely above a whisper. It was clear that Adrian knew about her and she didn’t know since when, but she was not in a state to ask him about it now. All she wanted was to see her father come out of his unconscious state for now.
Silence ensured as neither said anything in return. Their fingers were tangled. The weight in her heart reduced a little. With him by her side, she felt better than before. Things were left unexplained between them. She didn’t know how he came to know about her and why did he not react when he knew about her. She lied to him yet he was here to support her. Many questions came across her mind but she chose to push them away. All she wanted for now was to feel the warmth he was giving her and slowly, she drifted intlo sleep on his shoulder.
