In New York, Liam was in the living room playing hide and seek with the twins. He heard Mia’s small giggles behind the curtains and slowly made his way towards her. He took small steps, trying to make the least noise possible.
Once Liam reached the spot where Mia was hiding, he smiled and grasped the curtain. He swung the curtain away, finding the little girl in front of him. Mia let out a scream before laughing as she ran away.
Liam laughed along with the little girl as he chased behind her. Mia ran around the spacious living room as fast as she could, trying to get away from her father. When Liam finally caught up with the little girl, he wrapped his arms around her and picked her up.
Mia laughed before yelling, “Ian! Help me. Daddy caught me!” Ian, who was hiding behind a curtain on the other side ran to his sister’s rescue. “Let her go!” Ian hurried towards Liam and grabbed his hand.
Ian tugged on Liam’s hand, trying to get him to let his sister run free. Instead of letting go of Mia, Liam carried her over his shoulder before crouching down. As soon as he crouched down, he wrapped his arm around Ian and threw him over his shoulder.
Liam stood up as the two toddlers giggled. “Enough games for today. It’s time to go to bed.” Liam stepped down the stairs as he carried the twins to their bedroom. After walking inside the bedroom, Liam took the twins to the bathroom to give them a bath before tucking them into bed.
After giving the twins a bath, Liam dressed them in their matching pajamas and took them to their beds. He tucked them into their beds and gave them a kiss on the forehead. Once Liam was ready to leave, Mia spoke, “Daddy, can you read us a book?”
Liam, who had his hand on the door handle, stepped inside the bedroom once again. He walked to the small bookshelf in between both beds and picked out a book. “This one?” Liam asked, fully knowing it was the twins’ favorite story.
“Yes!” exclaimed the twins after seeing the book in Liam’s hand. Liam smiled and stepped closer to Mia’s bed. He sat on the edge of the bed and opened the book. “Ready?” he asked before beginning to read the story in the children’s book.
Halfway through the story, Liam noticed the twins had fallen asleep. He stood up from the bed and walked to the bookshelf. He placed the book back on its spot before turning to look at the twins.
He stepped closer to Ian pulled up the covers, covering Ian’s body so he would not get cold during the night. Once again, Liam made his way to the door. He turned off the lights and walked out of the twins’ bedroom.
Liam walked to his bedroom as he stared at the phone screen in his hand. He opened the door of the bedroom and let himself inside. He shut the door and stepped further inside his bedroom. He walked to the sofa on one side of the bedroom and took a seat.
He reached over to the glass bottle sitting on the center table and opened it. He poured some of the alcoholic drink inside the glass and then placed the bottle back on the table. He picked up the glass and took a sip of the drink.
He stared at the doors in front of him and let out a sigh. He reached for the cellphone resting on top of the glass table before taking another sip of the drink. He unlocked his phone and went to the contacts application.
He went to his favorited phone number and looked at the contact information. He started at the phone screen, watching Caroline’s photo portrayed on the screen. He looked up at the doors, leading to a walk-in closet once more before looking back down at his phone screen. He let out a sigh and thought it was best if he did not call her.
In Miami, after Charles startled Persephone by abruptly grabbing her wrist, they stared into each other’s eyes for a few seconds. “Charles,” Persephone softly voiced, “I- I thought you were asleep.”
“I was, but you woke me up.” Persephone tried to pull back her arm, but Charles gripped harder as she said, “I’m sorry. I will go away so you can sleep.”
“No, stay. Please,” Charles responded as he sat up. He slowly let go of her wrist and she sat on the spot next to him. They sat in the almost-dark living room looking at the vast nothingness in the darkness in front of them.
In order to break the silence, Persephone spoke, “I met Veronica today.”
“I know,” Charles replied, making Persephone shift her gaze towards him. “I-I mean I know because you just told me.” Charles chuckled awkwardly, making Persephone giggle. Not wanting to press on the matter, Persephone decided to ignore Charles’ comment as she stood up from the sofa.
Persephone made her way through the glass doors, leading to a small balcony. She spread her arms out and placed her hands on the railing. She looked at the vast ocean that spread over the horizon, blending with the night sky.
She let out a sigh as Charles stood behind her. “What did you talk about?” he asked. He stepped closer to her, standing to her side. She turned to the side and responded, “we discussed a few things.”
After a moment of silence, Charles uttered, “I’m sorry.”
“What? What are you sorry for?”
“I’m sorry for what happened. I’m sorry for not being the man you deserve. I’m sorry I couldn’t be a better father for Achilles. I’m sorry I ran away like a coward. I’m sorry for saying those things to you. I’m sorry I let her come between us. I’m sorry I let my past break our engagement. I’m sorry for breaking your trust. I’m sorry I didn’t treat you right. I’m sorry for breaking the promise between us. I’m sorry I let you go so easily.”
Persephone was about to reach out her hand, but instead, she curled her fingers into a fist and then spoke, “Charles, it’s not your fault. I don’t want to say that we’re even, but we both fucked up. We committed the same mistake. We both lied to each other. We both broke our promise.”
Persephone wiped away the tear streaming down her cheek and then added, “I love you, Charles. It pains me to remember the way I betrayed you. I know I should have never gotten back at you in such a pitiful manner, but I was hurt.”
Persephone took a moment to wipe away her tears as she let out a light chuckle. “I’ve never done this. I’ve never had someone betray me in such a way. I’ve never had anyone hurt me this badly. I’m not trying to make myself look like the victim; I fucked up just as bad as you did.”
“Persephone…”
“Charles, I’m really sorry for what happened and I hope you are willing to open your heart to me once again. Maybe not right now. Maybe not soon. But I am hoping that one day, we are able to make new promises… Promises that we will never break.”
Persephone slowly looked away. She began making her way back inside the mansion, leaving Charles alone with the cool ocean breeze. Charles watched as Persephone walked inside the dimly illuminated room. He opened his mouth as if he had something to say, but his mind went blank.
He stood there for a few seconds before hurrying towards Persephone, as he felt she was slipping away from his grasp. He stood behind her and embraced her in his arms. “Don’t go. You can’t leave me; you can’t leave just like that.”
“Charles…”
“Sephie, I love you too and I refuse to let you go. As you said, we both fucked up, but we can both fix this.” Persephone slowly slipped from Charles’ grasp and turned around. She looked into his eyes as she reached out her hand.
She softly laid her hand against his cheek and wiped away the tear resting on his cheekbone as he gently placed his hand on top of hers. He brought her hand closer to his mouth and pressed a peck against the palm of her hand. “I am never letting you go.”
Charles wrapped his arms around her, tilting his head forward as he pressed his forehead against hers. “It’s just you and me… and our beautiful son. That’s all we need.” Persephone smiled despite the tears running down her face and repeated, “that’s all we need.”
The next day, after Achilles woke up after a good nights’ sleep, he got up from the bed and left his bedroom. He walked to Persephone’s bedroom, looking for his mother. When he opened the door, he found the bed still intact.
“Mommy?” He let out as he looked around the spacious bedroom, hoping he would find her around. After a few seconds of standing there in silence, he decided to go downstairs. Achilles was making his way to the kitchen when he looked over at the living room.
Seeing that there was someone lying on the couch, he decided to walk towards the strange person on the couch. As soon as he stood in front of the couch, he found Charles and Persephone asleep on the couch.
“Mommy! Daddy!” Achilles called out but got no response. He called out their names but again, he got no response. He softly tapped Charle’s shoulder, trying to wake him up. “Daddy, daddy, wake up.”
Charles moved his shoulder, trying to brush him off. Seeing how reluctant they were to wake up, he looked around the room as he thought of a way to wake them up. He grabbed one of the cushions that were on sitting on the floor.
He rose the cushion above his head before throwing it down against his parents. Persephone, who was peacefully sleeping with her head resting on Charles’ chest, was in the way of the hit. As soon as the cushion hit her face, Persephone woke up.
She sat up and yelled, “Achilles!” Persephone looked at her son before looking at Charles. They stared at each other for a few seconds before looking at the toddler standing next to them. Charles sat up as he watched Persephone’s angry expression. She was about to lightly scold him, but Charles covered her mouth with his hand.
“Little man, why don’t you go to the kitchen and check up on the breakfast?” Achilles nodded before running away to the kitchen, trying to get away from his mother. As soon as Charles saw that Achilles was in the clear, he removed his hand from Persephone’s lips. “Why did you stop me from talking?”
“Because you were going to yell at him.”
“I wasn’t going to yell at him. I was only going to scold him. I don’t know where he got that new habit but he needs to learn that cannot do that.” Charles chuckled and then said, “you look cute when you’re angry.”
Persephone crossed her arms and then said, “that is not the point here.” Charles reached out his hand and pinched her cheek. “Why are you so cranky today? Is it because you slept on the couch instead of your bed?”
Persephone yawned as she scratched out her arms. “Yes; we must have fallen asleep while talking.” Persephone swung the couches’ decorative blanket to the side and stood up from the couch. “I will go freshen up before having breakfast.”
“Okay,” Charles replied, “I will go look for Achilles.” Persephone gave him a quick smile before walking away. As she climbed up the stairs, she covered her mouth with her hand before yawning.
‘We talked all night,’ Persephone recalled as she figured her fatigued was due to staying up late with Charles. Although she was annoyed for not getting eight hours of sleep, she was satisfied with the best sleep she has had in a while.
