“I used to think that I was a devoted lover. If I love someone, I would love him for a lifetime without turning back. But now I find it’s not true. I got tired of loving him.” Kristen smiled.
Why would she like Marco in the first place? She had seen a theory on the Internet.
The theory went like this, “When you like a person, you will feel that he is glowing. You want to get closer to him, like a moth flying into a flame. But if he does not respond to you, you will feel discouraged over time. In the end, he will mean nothing but a speck of dust to you.
“At this point of time, no matter how hard you try, you may not be able to recall the way he glows. Then you’ll realize you only love him for whom you think he is.”
To Kristen, she loved the one who carried her home sixteen years ago.
She thought Marco was like that, but it took her so many years to realize he was not.
“Then why do you want him to love you? I think these four years have taught you a lesson. Marco is cold-blooded. He will never love you. Don’t waste time on him.”
Antonio’s words were so harsh.
“It’s not a waste of time. Anyway, I don’t have much time left. It’s just a gamble to me. If he falls in love with me, then he’ll be drowned in regret and remorse for the rest of his life after my death. He won’t be able to rest at peace.” Kristen said these words with great determination. She was speaking to Antonio, and herself as well.
“What if you lose?” Antonio still did not agree.
There was madness in Kristen’s eyes. “I have nothing to lose. But if I win, I’ll be able to embrace my death happily.”
Antonio froze. Kristen’s words sent a chill down his spine. He had never seen Kristen like this. It seemed that she had no attachment to life anymore.
Kristen continued, “My complete disappearance after he falls in love with me is the best revenge I can think of.”
In the past, she had wanted Marco to love her because she loved him. But now, she wanted his love because she wanted to take revenge. Hatred could drive people to anything.
She had already wasted so many years on Marco. One more year was nothing. Perhaps someone would say that she was stupid or foolish. Why did she spend most of her life on the same man?
But they might have different opinions if they put themselves in her shoes. She had only a year left. Her cancer was torturing her with pain every day. She hung her life on medicine.
Her cancer would become more and more serious. Cancer cells would spread all over her stomach. At that time, she would not be able to eat anything. She would not be able to sleep at night. She would not be able to think, let alone to avenge.
Marco ruined her life, so she wanted him to feel the pain she suffered.
She had nothing now and could only take revenge on Marco in such an extreme way.
The chance of her winning was very low, but if Marco could care about her a little more, she would die without any grievance.
Antonio understood Kristen’s desire to take revenge, but he could not agree with it. He hoped that Kristen could prioritize her health and her own life, not hatred.
He understood that she hated Marco and wanted to take revenge on Marco, but why couldn’t she do those things while living happily?
If Kristen accepted chemotherapy and took medicine, she would live much longer.
Now she was gambling her life on a scum. Was it really worth it?
“Kristen, is it really worth it?”
“Yes. At least I can live a little more meaningful life, instead of waiting for death helplessly.” Kristen smiled. This smile was like a ray of sunlight in the world of snow. It was so fragile that a gust of wind or a piece of cloud could block it.
Marco would know about her illness sooner or later. She wouldn’t regret her decision if it could cause Marco to repent when he knew the truth.
Kristen was smiling, but the look in her eyes was lifeless.
Kristen asked, “What time is it now?”
Antonio took out his phone and glanced at it. “It’s half past one.”
It had been half an hour, and Marco should be here soon.
“Hurry up and leave. Marco is coming soon.”
Antonio looked at her worriedly. Kristen reached out and nudged him. She used to do this when she was a child.
“Go. I’ll be fine. Do it for my own good. I don’t want to be misunderstood by Marco.”
Antonio gritted his teeth and said, “Then I’m leaving. Take good care of yourself and call me if you need help. If you want to leave him, I’ll take you away, whatever it costs.”
Kristen agreed, “Okay.”
Antonio looked at Kristen one last time and then turned to leave.
Kristen watched until Antonio disappeared from sight. Her eyes were a little blurry. She rubbed her eyes and turned to look at the bright sun outside.
Summer was approaching.
