Kristen repeated her questions automatically. Her mind was a mess.
Marco had mixed feelings when he heard Kristen’s words, but his face gave no hint of it.
He felt an inexplicable pain when he gazed at Kristen. At the same time, the face of Brenda appeared in his mind.
He thought secretly, “Why do I feel bad about Kristen and even get frightened by her questions?”
It was a sunny day. The glasses of the windows were gleaming in the sunlight. It was bright and warm in the room. However, Marco broke out in cold sweat.
He suddenly stood up, held Kristen’s chin, and sneered, “Do you think I will have mercy on you after hearing your words. You have done something you shouldn’t have done. Don’t make that face and try to get out of it.”
Kristen froze for a second. Then she said with a smile, “Do you see through me?”
The light shone sideways on her face, causing half of her face shrouded in the shadows.
Marco signed in relief when Kristen admitted she was getting clever with him. He wanted to teach her a lesson but gave up when he saw Kristen was covered with injuries, looking fragile and vulnerable.
“Let’s go back.”
Kristen was a little surprised by Marco’s reaction. She had thought he would punish her. Kristen nodded and picked up a bag of medicine.
“What are they?”
Marco asked her although he already knew there were medicines in the bag.
“Some stomach medicines and nutritional supplements…”
Marco was a little shocked. He realized for the first time Kristen might get very ill because in his impression she would rather get injections than take bitter medicine. She hated it.
Kristen walked a few steps and stopped because her injured knees started to hurt when she walked. Kristen gritted her teeth and walked forward again. To her surprise, Marco picked her up in his arms with an impatient look.
Obviously, he thought that she walked too slowly.
The car parked at the entrance of the hospital. Marco placed Kristen in the passenger seat, then closed the door and walked around the front of the car into the driver’s seat.
Kristen fastened her seat belt and leaned her head against the window. Her long hair fell over her shoulders in a cascade. She looked down, lost in thought, her thick black lashes casting shadows under her eyes. She had an exquisite nose, but her lips were pale.
They had known each other for six years. The childish expression on her face had disappeared, but she was now more charming. One could not move his eyes from her once he saw her.
Kristen stared at the outside in silence. Marco took out a cigarette and lit it. Smoking while driving was a habit, which easily led to the occurrence of car accidents.
Kristen smelled smoke and wanted to remind him, but Marco said first, “Keep your mouth shut if you feel sick.”
Marco did it on purpose. He knew that Kristen hated the smell of cigarettes.
Kristen turned her head away. She rolled the window a little down and the wind blew in.
She was wearing the hospital gown which was light and in a bigger size. It puffed up like a balloon, making her look smaller and more fragile as if she would be blown away at the next second.
A restlessness came over Marco when he saw Kristen like this. He took two whiffs of his cigarette and extinguished it with his fingers.
At this moment, they passed a family of three who were walking along the road. The tall and strong man put his child on his shoulder. The woman smiled gently and looked up at her husband and son.
Kristen was shocked for a while. She still looked back over her shoulder even though she couldn’t see the couple anymore.
Marco saw the family too. However, Marco focused his attention on the child.
Marco suddenly remembered he had wanted to have a child with Kristen.
After Kristen was discharged from the hospital, he did not take any precautions. “Maybe she already had my baby,” Marco thought.
Marco quickly accepted the assumption and even started to expect his first baby.
