- Chapter 61 - The Rainy Day I Picked up a Puppy and a Kitten
Shinobu Naoyuki’s POV
As usual, the autumn season is still unpredictable when it comes to weather forecast being in the middle of the hottest and coldest seasons. The probabilities of raining today is 85% and so I decided to just bring my car to work in order to avoid getting drenched by an unexpected rain later this afternoon.
It has been almost a week after Kazuya’s university autumn festival and since then, he keeps bugging me about doing it with him but I managed to dodge all of his attempts. I know this may sound crazy coming from a thirty years old guy but just thinking about it makes me nervous and afraid especially after I crazily watched some videos out of curiosity. It makes me somehow think that what if I die because of doing it wrong for the first time isn’t it kind of shameful to die like that?
“Hahahahaha.” I was startled when I heard someone laughing in front of me.
Did I just accidentally blurt out something stupid in front of my patient’s parent? I pulled myself back to reality and look at the mother who is laughing in front of me.
“Excuse but is there something wrong?” I asked with my usual serious tone.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I just can’t stop laughing because of the video that my husband sent me.”
“…” I remained staring at her while hiding my relief for not being the reason of her exaggerated laughter.
“Here, look at this doc.” She shows me what she is watching on her phone. It was a video of a large dog getting bullied by a small kitten. The dog kind of reminds me of Kazuya’s dog Natsu.
“Are those your pets?” I asked her after watching the short clip.
“The dog is actually my sister’s pet and she just leaves it to us sometimes whenever she is busy with work. Only that mean cat belongs to us.”
“Is it fun owning a cat even though it is so mean like that?”
“Well it is sometimes troublesome but just thinking of raising it like your own child is very fulfilling.”
“I see.”
“Are you interested in getting a cat to be raised? I know someone whose cat will give birth soon so maybe I can ask them for you.”
“Ah, no. I am still thinking about it so maybe getting a cat now is too soon for me.”
“I understand. Just tell me if you finally decided to get one.”
Our conversation ends shortly after my newly hired assistant presented the check up results to her.
The day goes smoothly and I am in a good mood when I suddenly realized that Kazuya didn’t bug me the whole day. Is he that busy with school? I started reaching out for my phone to message him but I stop midway when I saw the time in the clock.
It is already time for me to go home. Maybe it is better to just contact him later once I get home and invite him over for dinner after the rain stops.
I started driving my way home slowly because of the rain when I suddenly hears my phone ringing from my pocket. I stop the car first to check on my phone and sees that it is Kazuya finally calling after a long day.
“Hello?” he answers with a low voice almost inaudible because of the sound of the rain in the background.
“Hey, why did you suddenly call? Where are you?” I ask him.
“I was actually on my way home from the university when the rain burst down.”
“Don’t tell me that you did not even check the weather probabilities today? You didn’t even bring an umbrella right now right?”
“Uhm- well actually I, ah hahaha nevermind.” All I can do is make a face palm while thinking how Kazuya acts like an idiot sometimes.
“Where are you? I am on my car right now so I can pick you up.”
“I am here two stops away from the university when the rain started and so I decided to stay here in front of a closed store for a while.”
“Do you mean the closed candy shop there?”
“Yes that one. You see, I cannot actually move freely here so-“
“I will be there in ten minutes so stay still.” I cut him off and just ask him to stay before ending our call.
I take my car in a U-turn and drive towards the direction of the university. I take a little detour in order to avoid the heavy traffic in the main roads and so I ended up driving in the narrow neighbourhood streets where there is almost no one passing by. The drive is going smoothly and as I have no problem in navigating in the neighbourhood until an accident happened.
I was taken by surprise when a cat jumped in front of my way. I instinctively step on the brake so hard and tried my best to change the direction of my car.
Fortunately, there was no one walking at the sidewalk when I hit the side barrier. I nervously walks outside the car to check if the cat is alright but unfortunately, I think it was still hit in the back left leg when I take the turn a little too late.
“I’m very sorry little one.” I lift up the injured cat in my arms and walks back inside the car before we get completely drenched by the rain.
I check for the cat again closely to check the injury, I am not sure if the injury is fatal for its small leg with some little scratches around it and so I decided to just perform a first aid by wrapping its injured leg with my handkerchief just to make sure that it will not worsen if the cat tries to move around before continuing my drive to pick up Kazuya.
I drive for a few more minutes until I spotted another car parked in front of the candy shop where Kazuya is supposed to be waiting. I drive closer until my car is parked head to head with the other car. I grab my wet umbrella from the backseat and went out to search for Kazuya because the rain is getting heavier.
“Stay here little cat, I’ll be right back.” I gently pet the kitten’s head before getting out of the car.
“Hey, will you stop laughing. I already told you that Yuki allowed me to take this home.” I can already hear Kazuya’s voice and feels like he is having an argument with someone.
“Hahaha but it was really funny to imagine you walking on the streets carrying a large portrait looking so proud until the rain started pouring. Look at you now; you look just like a wet puppy.” I finally realized that it was Hisashi annoying Kazuya for the nth time.
“What are you two doing?” I walk closer until they finally notice me.
“Ah, Yuki! You see, Hisashi is making fun of me again.” He complains to me like a little kid after being bullied.
“Eh?! No I’m not. It was just a coincidence to see him while I was driving back home. I thought it was a lost dog sitting in front of the store.”
“See! You are making fun of me again.”
“But you really look like one when you are sitting down on the floor like that, hahaha.”
“And you look like a mean cat with your head looking out of your car window like that.” Kazuya pointed at him while Hisashi is still sitting inside his car with his windows open.
They really look like two kindergarten kids trying to insult each other. I am still enjoying watching both of them while making fun of them inside my head but I suddenly remembers that I still got an injured kitten waiting to be treated soon.
“Listen up! You kids, stop teasing each other. It is time to go home.” I stand between them to finally finish their face off. “Hisashi, thanks for looking out for Kazuya here, bye.”
“Yeah, sure but I am not really looking out for him. Bye.” Hisashi closes his window and left.
“And you, what is wrong with you for not bringing an umbrella today?” I faced Kazuya who is still sticking out his tongue towards the direction where Hisashi has driven off.
“I actually brought one earlier but I left it in the university because I cannot carry it along with this.” He sheepishly pointed to the giant photo frame behind him.
“So you really plan carrying that photo while walking home? *sigh* you should have call me to pick you up.” I can finally understand why Hisashi is making fun of him earlier. I can clearly picture out the face he is making while he happily skip and slide while carrying my enormous photo down the road without caring about the people staring at him.
“Sorry, I just don’t want to trouble you over simple things like this.”
“Well, just forget it. Put it in the backseat of my car already.” I walk back to my car and open the backdoor for him.
He carefully carry the photo frame inside and made sure that it is placed intact before closing the door and gets into the passenger seat.
“Oh, Yuki what is this kitten doing with you?” Kazuya pick up the kitten from the seat and lays it back to his lap.
“I accidentally run over it while driving here and I wanted to bring it to a veterinarian after I drop you home.”
“I can go with you to a vet; I think going to Harada-san is the best choice.”
“Oh you are right; I almost forgot that you know a nice vet. Let’s go.”
The rain is still continues when we arrived in front of the small alley that leads towards Harada-san’s animal clinic.
“Are you sure that her clinic is still open?” I asked Kazuya before unbuckling my seatbelt.
“Yes, I’m sure she is still there and waiting for the rain to stop. Trust me, I know her for more than ten years.”
“Okay, then let’s go inside now. Can you carry the kitten out? I will let you use my umbrella.” I open my door and preparing to make a short run in the alley towards the clinic.
“Wait, let us just share the umbrella together.” Kazuya grabbed my hand before getting out with the umbrella in his right hand and the little kitten cuddled in his left arm.
“Let me carry the kitten, it will troublesome if you are holding something with your two hands.” I gently grab the kitten from his arm as we started walking together under the small umbrella. I hide the kitten inside my jacket to avoid it from getting wet from the rain and to ensure that it is not feeling cold.
“Walk closer here Yuki. You are getting wet from the side.” He suddenly grabs my shoulder with his left hand and I almost jumped out of surprise.
“It’s alright; it is given knowing how small this umbrella is to be shared by two grown men.”
“But it is not alright with me.” I was caught by the moment when he wrapped my back with his embrace and we just pause from walking and just stay still. “Yuki, do you know how anxious I am every time it rains down?” He whispers into my right ear
“Why? What’s wrong with the rain?” I ask him back.
“I don’t know if you already know this but based on what I’ve seen these days, your probability of dying is getting higher every time it rains.” He holds me tighter and puts his head on my shoulder and I can feel the tears dripping down my clothes.
“Kazuya, maybe it is just a coincidence. Calm down. I already promised that I will try my best to live so you don’t have to worry okay?” I used my free hand to caress his hair as I try to calm him down.
I keep telling him words of assurance and yet it only makes me feel guiltier about it. It is true that the balance of the probabilities is progressing rapidly to what I expected. It feels so sad and yet I feel a little at ease knowing that all the danger is coming only towards me.
My probability of dying just went up back to 86% while Kazuya is at only 9% and the remaining with only 5%. Just a little more and I can finally save the two of them…
“Yuki…”
“Kazuya, it will be alright in the end.” I look up and notice that the sky already turns bright as the rain already stops just a few seconds ago. “We should go to the clinic now before Harada-san decides to go home.”
I wipe Kazuya’s face and pinch his cheeks to make him smile a little before going inside the clinic.
“Oh Kazuya, it’s been a while. I’m glad you visit me every now and then.” Harada-san who is having a coffee nearby the entrance spotted Kazuya immediately when we entered the clinic.
“Actually I came here today because I brought some patient for you.” He moves a little so Harada-san can see me and what I am carrying inside my jacket but I think she misunderstands what he meant.
“Why? Is there something wrong with your boyfriend?” I almost choked out with my own saliva when I heard those words coming from the mouth of an old woman.
“How—how did you know that?” Kazuya also didn’t expect to hear those words as well and it is kind of awkward facing her now because she can be almost be considered as Kazuya’s parent who raised him during those days when Kazuya cannot live on his own.
“I already knew it from the moment I laid my eyes into you during the first time I saw you two together.”
“Do you mean that time when I said goodbye to Natsu?”
Hey! Isn’t that a little too long time ago? And besides, we were just starting as friends back then… My mind started flashing out those moments and I started hesitating myself when I remembered everything.
“That moment when I saw you two hugging each other as you cry like a lost child and as he softly consoles you, I already knew that there will be a beautiful love story blooming between the two of you.”
“Then can we ask for your blessing in our relationship? You are the only adult that can act as my guardian so can I ask you that? Yuki’s family already gave me their blessing so can you give yours to Yuki?” Kazuya sounded a bit too excited and I feel a little embarrassed imagining that it looks like we are preparing for a wedding.
“Well if that is what you wanted then I can do that. Come here you two so that I can give you my blessing and wish you a bright future together.” We walk towards her and she put each of her hand in our head as she makes a silent wish for us.
“Thank you Harada-san.” I made a formal bow as a token of appreciation and respect towards her.
“I hope that you will be always be with Kazuya forever.” She smiles and pats my head until she notice what I am holding in my arms. “Oh, did you bring that kitten to get a treatment?”
“Yes, I actually run over it by accident earlier and I wanted to make sure that it can walk back normally again.” I pass the kitten to her to let her examine it closely.
“Hmmm… let me check… Ohh, it was a good thing that you wrapped it up like this earlier or else the sprain might have worsened. Let’s go to care room so that I can proceed to the treatment.” She walks down the hallway and we just followed her until we reached into a room that looks like an operating room but less scary.
“Harada-san where are you assistants?” Kazuya asks when he notices that nobody is around the clinic.
“I already let them go home earlier before the rain even starts to fall.”
“I see, and then do you need some help in treating that kitten? I can still remember the things you taught me when I was working for you.”
“No need. This kitten only got some little scratches and sprained joints so it will only take a few minutes. Let me just inject some medicine and put on a leg support brace.”
We just watch in the sidelines as she treat the kitten which really behaves unlike those cats who loves squirm and scratch every time someone tries to touch them. The kitten just stay still as Harada-san put on the leg brace on its back leg.
“Here, it is done. You just have to let the kitten take this medicine for a week to lessen its pain and ten days before removing the leg brace just to be sure that it is fully recovered.” She handed back the kitten to my arms and a bag full of medicine for the cat.
“Thank you very much, Harada-san.””
After everything has been taken care of, Kazuya and I went back to my car.
“Yuki, do you plan to take care of that kitten starting today?”
“Well I don’t want to let it go until it is fully recovered and I am considering giving it to an animal shelter once it is back to normal.”
“Why not officially adopt it already? Didn’t you promise to get a pet some time ago?”
“I did, but raising a little kitten like this may be a little too much.”
“Then I will help you raise it. We will take good care of it as if it is our own child.” He blurted out something so embarrassing that he didn’t even notice. My face gets flushed just thinking about the idea of raising a cat together.
“Fine. I will adopt it but you will have to take care of all the troubles that this will kitten will do alright?” I can’t help but be swayed by his words.
“Yes! I’m fine with that. Then can we go to a pet store first? We should buy some cat food first.” His eyes are sparkling with excitement as I drive towards a nearby store.
“Good evening sir, what products are you looking for?” the staff welcomes me as soon as we enter the shop.
“I need some cat food and cat toys.”
“How old is your cat sir?” she asked.
“I’m not sure but…” I am not very familiar in judging an animal’s age and so I try to make my own estimate when Kazuya finally enters the store and it is unexpected for him to carry the kitten along with him. “Oh that one, that’s my kitten but I don’t know how old it is.” I pointed at Kazuya approaching us.
“Oh, your cat is big.” She muttered to herself but I still manage to hear her.
“What do you mean?” I ask her.
“I’m just kidding hahaha.” She looks closer to the kitten in Kazuya’s arms. “I think this kitten is around six months old. Let me guide you towards the kitten section of our store.”
We followed her towards a shelf full of kitten stuffs that I am not familiar with but luckily, Kazuya takes care of everything. We got a basket full of wet and dry foods and some cat treats before proceeding to choose the toys and litter box for the cat.
While wandering around the unfamiliar displays, I was fascinated when I spotted a cute looking cat tree.
“Kazuya, hey look Kazuya, do you think our cat will love this one?” I pointed it out to Kazuya.
“Isn’t it too big and fancy for the kitten?” he stared at the tall cat tree I am pointing.
“But I want it!”
“Eh? But you are not a cat Yuki.”
“But it is cute.”
“It is too expensive. A simple cat bed would be enough.”
“But I still want it.”
“No, we don’t need that.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Please.”
“Ugh stop asking me with those pleading eyes.”
“…” I continue looking through his eyes.”
“Fine, but I swear that you will just regret buying that thing because cats only like hanging out inside a cardboard box.”
“I don’t care, as long as I buy it.”
“Okay, but then how are supposed to take it back to your place? It won’t fit in your car.”
“Same as with all the stuffs you bought.” I pointed out to the cart full of toys, the cage, the litter box, the small bed and something that looks like a small tent.
“Well they said that they can deliver it tomorrow.”
“Then it is settled.”
We walk into the cashier to pay for everything and ask them to just deliver some stuff that won’t fit in inside my car.
“It seems that you got excited shopping for your pet. Is it your first time sir?” the cashier asks after giving us the bill. I am too busy getting my money out of my bag and so I didn’t have time to respond.
“Well yes, it is all for our first born child.” Kazuya answered and I almost choked out.
“It is my first pet. He is just fooling around so forget what he just said.” I secretly stomp on Kazuya’s feet to stop him from spouting jokes like that.
“Ah, hahaha I see.” The cashier awkwardly laughs it off as she receives my payment and handed out the receipt. “Then would you like to buy a new collar? We have some new designs where we use a laser printer to carve its name on it.”
“Really? Then we will take one.” Kazuya is getting excited again.
“But we still haven’t decided about the name of the kitten.” I said to him with a low voice.
“Ah I almost forgot about that! Then how about we just merge our names together?”
“Like Kazuki? Yukiya?” I started shuffling the characters in our names.
“No, it is little long for a cat’s name.”
“Then how about Kaki? Or maybe Yuya?”
“Hmm.. How about Naoya?
“But isn’t sounds too much like my name?”
“Well you two are so much alike.”
“What? No, I don’t look like a cat.”
“But look at its fur color, it is almost just like your bluish gray hair and look how cute it is.”
“Yes, you are right sir; the two of you almost look alike together.” I almost forgot that there is the cashier watching us.
“Okay, fine. From now on this kitten will be named as Naoya.”
The staff carved in the name to the collar we picked out and finally left the store while carrying the important stuff we need and leaving the rest to be delivered for tomorrow.
“Thank you for your patronage, please come again!” All the staff happily led us to the doorway.
